An early start at the BBC this morning, discussing reports of a possible plague outbreak in Russia on BBC Breakfast.

The circumstances are concerning, but we don’t yet know that this was plague. Rapid diagnosis and investigation are key.

The UK is already a life sciences powerhouse. The question is how we turn that strength into better care and lasting economic growth.

As well as official engagements, party conferences are a great opportunity for informal discussions on the NHS workforce, clinical research, pandemic preparedness & health security. I’ve known Andy B for years. This was at last year’s Labour Conference. I suspect he’ll be too busy to catchup in 2027

UK mosquitoes can be annoying, but did you realise that they used to carry a form of malaria? 🦟 Human malaria was eliminated here in the early 20th century through a combination of land drainage and mosquito control. 🧪

Text graphic with a blue to green gradient background. Text reads: "Did you know? Historically known as ‘ague’, malaria was once common in the marshy areas of southern England but had largely disappeared by the 19th century." A white emblem of marsh plants appears at the bottom right.

Interesting follow-up on research into ageing and space.

I spoke to Professor Anne McArdle on Scouse Science in 2021, as she prepared to launch the MicroAge experiment. Fascinating to see how the research has developed since.

Looking forward to being in Denmark next week for the ESCMID ESGIB course on CNS infections. Excellent speakers, interesting discussions, and, if we're lucky, some pastries and a little Hans Christian Andersen along the way. Looking forward to seeing many colleagues there.
