Considering that approximately 1 in 726 men will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, it's important that we not just educate men on the signs & symptoms, but also to increase research into male breast cancer

Due to the lack of general education and care provided to cisgendered men when it comes to breast changes & what is "normal", men are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced disease, which in turn, reduces their 5-year mortality rate compared to women

This doesn't mean that if you are a cis-male that you'll be safe - approximately 0.5 - 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. That came up as 2,790 cisgender men in United States being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2024 (American Cancer Society)

A common breast change that can cause discomfort but is considered normal is Fibrocystic Breasts - which present as lumpy & nodular breast tissue that fluctuate in size with the menstrual cycle.

A particular type of cysts - galactoceles - occur when milk ducts are blocked, causing enlargement of the mammary glands. This is most commonly seen in lactating individuals, and can sometimes mimic malignancy due to swelling and inflammatory reactions.

Another common benigne cause of lumps are Fibroadenomas - which present as painless solid, smooth & firm lumps in the breast tissue that feel rubbery and move freely around.

One of the most common benign (non-cancerous) cause of lumps are cysts - which are fluid filled sacs and more commonly experienced by people between 35 - 50.

Let's start with something a little light hearted - Most of the breast changes an individual experiences in their llifetime is not cancer related, and some of the causes are relatively benign. However, it is always good to get any changes checked out as soon as possible.
