In the 1950s and 1960s, sociologist Peter Townsend returned to the estate as part of his research on poverty, inequality, and working class community. Now a dilapidated anachronism awaiting demolition, it was inhabited only by white residents (British, Irish and Maltese).

Fights over Jewish immigration and Home Rule for Ireland coexisted with everyday kindnesses and powerful solidarities. Residents of different backgrounds lent each other money, helped each other find work, flirted and married across religious and national divides.

But they also illustrate the rich social life of the estate, across ethnic, national and religious differences: Eastern European Jews, Irish Catholics, French, German, Turkish, Indian and Caribbean residents lived alongside migrants from across Britain.

It didn’t turn out as intended. Notes kept by two early collectors - Beatrice Potter (later Webb) and Ella Pycroft - detail resident complaints about the design, protests against ‘improving’ rules and schemes, and the rapid turnover of tenants.

Built near the docks in 1885, Katharine Buildings was a philanthropic experiment in housing the poorest east Londoners. Residents rented basic, unfurnished rooms, overseen by ‘lady rent collectors’ who sought to encourage ‘respectable’ habits and good morals.
