2/2 The Atlantic begins to cool later in the season and the prime area for hurricane formation switches to the Gulf or Caribbean. Once they form they can be picked up by the trade winds which are now moving generally west to east.
1/2 In the months of June through August we experience our trade winds in the tropics move from east to west. It is more common to see a storm form in the Atlantic and then move into the Gulf. Starting mid-September or October trade winds shift and storms usually favour forming in the warm gulf.
It’s common, especially this time of the year. October the Atlantic generally begins to cool and tropical cyclone activity shifts to warmer spots like the Gulf. In October, when they form in the Gulf they then follow the trade winds which pushes the storm generally eastward.
Tropical Storm #Isaias has formed as is expected to become the first #hurricane of the Atlantic season. The Gulf is notorious for rapid intensification, I would not rule out a Cat 3+ storm. Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches will likely be issued later today or tomorrow. #wx
