Every desert river rat knows that tamarisk is sucks up our most precious resource. But what if the science we've been basing that on is wrong? An eye-opening piece on one of the Southwest's most reviled trees, and how saving our rivers is a lot more complex than simply getting rid of tamarisk:

Across the Northeast, unsafe and outdated dams are coming down to revitalize fish runs and improve public safety. As our Northeast Regional Director, Andy Fisk, says, "Proximity to abundance is transformational."

A swarm of wild bees infected with a deadly mite caught a ride on an international cargo ship. โ€œIf this spreads, then weโ€™re in serious trouble,โ€ thought one biologist. Fortunately, the swarm was intercepted. But the close call is a warning for biologists and beekeepers.

In my latest for @biographic.bsky.social, I reported on a Southeast Asian mite that is spreading into parts of Europe, threatening honey bees. Last summer, a cargo ship carrying mite-infested bees was headed toward the U.S. when officials intercepted the swarm. biographic.com/a-mite-on-a-...

In the southwestern U.S., tamarisk is considered a villain: a water-guzzling invasive tree sucking rivers dry. But 25 years after a beetle was released to knock tamarisk back, water levels still haven't risen--and riparian wildlife is still struggling. Why?

Over the past four centuries, scientists have calculated that New England's dams have deprived its ecosystems of more than 9 million metric tons (20 billion pounds) of alewives-roughly the weight of
300,000 humpback whales.
