Over the past week, the top courts in 2 major fossil fuel producing nations heard or decided landmark cases that could have significant implications for the fossil fuel industry

The Australian court delivered a pro-accountability ruling

Will #SCOTUS do so too?

The Mt Pleasant coal mine expansion was expected to generate 870 Mt of CO2 - 98% of it from burning the coal overseas

But the project's approval failed to consider imposing conditions to minimize these emissions - and was thus invalid, the court said

I wrote about how no matter what SCOTUS decides in Suncor v. Boulder case, they can't stop climate attribution science. One way or another, accountability is coming.

This internal 1988 memo shows that Exxon understood climate action as a threat to its business And it supports the argument that any "climate solutions" Exxon promoted (algae, CCS, etc.) were not serious fixes to the climate change problem fueled by the company's core products

A must read from @insideclimatenews.org, reporting on previously undisclosed docs in a consumer fraud case against Exxon brought by Massachusetts, a case that is deep into discovery 👀

Big win for climate accountability in Australia 🇦🇺

Australia's High Court ruled that approval of a coalmine expansion failed to consider imposing conditions to minimize scope 3 GHG emissions - and was therefore invalid

Big day for climate & environmental law today w/ #SCOTUS hearing Suncor v. Boulder

A rundown here on some of things that came up during oral arguments

It's the eve of a "blockbuster" climate case hearing at the US Supreme Court (and yes, the term "deception" in the title here is intentional, as there is lots of mischaracterizing going on)

Some thoughts here

Just days before the Supreme Court hears Boulder’s landmark climate case against Big Oil, a New Jersey county filed the latest climate suit against the industry.

A NJ county filed the latest climate suit against #BigOil just days before SCOTUS hears a landmark climate case. That decision could end the county’s suit & dozens of others nationwide

But county officials say they weren't deterred by the looming #SCOTUS ruling

Update - Today legal challenges to this rollback were filed by a coalition of environmental groups (@sierraclub.org, @biologicaldiversity.org & others) and, separately, by California & 25 other states, cities & counties

Big Oil remains the most significant obstacle to reducing emissions and limiting climate harms. It’s important to understand the long history of that.

The climate crisis we face today wasn't inevitable, and we have the receipts.

I spoke to lawmakers and advocates in Minnesota, Washington State, Connecticut, and Vermont, and their message to polluters is clear: they're not backing down.

States want to make Big Oil pay for climate harm. Now, courts are weighing in.

Aaron's piece is spot-on This extends far beyond climate & "really does represent an attempt to fundamentally restructure our corporate governance model in the US" They want to not only dismantle the regulatory state, but also take away any judicial recourse to remedy harms. It is utter impunity

The Trump administration finalized a rule on Monday that significantly rolls back fuel economy standards on motor vehicles—a move that harms public health, the environment and consumers pocketbooks. It comes as gas prices skyrocket and Americans reel from an affordability crisis.

In these perilous times, w/ escalating backlash to climate action from corporate polluters & government backers, the UN SG reminded us that those fighting for accountability & justice "are on the right side of history"

Justice Samuel Alito, who holds investments in individual fossil fuel companies, just recused himself from a key climate case before the Supreme Court. But he participated in the decision-making process to hear the case in the first place.
