"These are Gen X parents who came of age during the moral panic around punk, rap and heavy metal...It’s not hard to imagine this generational cohort eager to prove the music they loved is no more toxic or dangerous than any other generation."

Wrote about MISTY GREEN, a movie as messy (non-complimentary) as its protagonist.

And while I was at it, I brought up GIRL 6 and NAKED ACTS, two films that tackle the subject of black women in Hollywood far more successfully.

tough debate, but I think the "builders" really downplay the long-term horrors seen in places like cancer alley and coal country

I haven't listened to either in years tbqh, so I am intrigued. Will bump both and circle back. I recall the Documentary being more hungry than DA, which I remember as smug and ~kingmaking~.

it's especially funny bc nostalgia is the premiere cultural mode rn. cultural products are actually looking too familiar

@kearse.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 2:04 PM

seeing lots of folks my age (mid 30s) voluntarily opt out of culture then rage about culture "leaving them behind." used to think it was sad, but it's actually just annoying. your incuriosity is not the world's problem, b

might have been a bad idea to let a national retail chain call itself banana republic

@kearse.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 6:15 PM

I hear that! and it's not really up to me to decide. I just don't think I 'did the work' per se to make it a horror story. but the genre's got range, for sure!

@kearse.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 6:09 PM

I'm flattered when people call Liquid Snakes a horror novel, but I don't think the shoe entirely fits

🧵 1/ In March, ICE arrested Carlos Moreno, a blind and partially deaf father of four as he was leaving court in Pottsville. He was there to pay a fine for a noise citation. The agents ripped him away from his pregnant wife, Wendys, without explanation, leaving her to prepare for birth alone.

I really see it on tiktok and reddit, where accounts take positions downstream from discourse, but never really break artists. (tho of course there are exceptions)

@kearse.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 3:13 PM

the numbers are grim, but I do think something that isn't captured is what might be called the periwinkle effect, where critics are shaping what listeners gravitate toward and find, but audiences don't know.
