Please take this short survey if your library has banned banned books week this year and please share widely.

I would rather hang out with Tilney than a lot of other Austen men.

Just finished pulling a cart of books for tomorrow's research workshop (medieval literature, one of my favorite classes to work with): women ascetics and mysticism, all the monster theory I can get my hands on, sexuality & gender roles, Arthuriana, multimodality & transmission, & more.

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your CV? Librarian: Those years were deaccessioned.

Yay, thank you!

Twice! I re-read it at the beginning of October, which sparked my interest in Gothic novels. I haven't read any of the books Catherine Morland and her friends mention.

So did we. And we don't stock much of LRH's fiction, since most of his books just don't circulate.

Today at the research help desk: there is no ebook version, L. Ron Hubbard, tracking down full text, identifying a plant pathogen and a new vocab word for me (hemiparasitic), pencils, and printing.

The lines about smelling another's breath and how there was no one left to bury the dead are haunting.

@anniethebook.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 4:51 PM

Oh, interesting! I need to read up more on the genesis of Gothic literature. Most of what I know about 18th c. literature is satirists and poets--plus enough about Samuel Richardson to understand why people were taking the piss out of Clarissa.

I really hope there's an update on this. I completely agree with your advice to leave this alone...but I really want to know what's going on!

@anniethebook.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 4:40 PM

I was vastly entertained by Otranto! What was your dissertation about? If you don't mind sharing?

@anniethebook.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 4:25 PM

I just talked a co-worker into putting this on their TBR. This book is too batshit and hilarious not to share!

Behold!! On this Indigenous People’s Day, the first page of the first number of THE CHEROKEE PHOENIX (1828)- featuring the Cherokee Constitution in English & Cherokee, in the syllabary created by Sequoyah. An epic milestone in Native American history and the history of print

Picture of the newspaper - with an engraving of a great Phoenix at the top, and double columns of type below, with English and Cherokee juxtaposed

any way there is no such thing as "boy books" or "girl books" and anyone telling you otherwise doesn't know what the hell they're talking about, as I hope is abundantly clear with this latest piss poor attempt

Last week on the bookish internet: the state of book banning in the US and how to fight back, Anne Carson, bookish history stories, and more!

Please do! I’m surprised it’s taken humanity so long to do sexy Dostoevsky. 😆

This week at the research help desk: Mesopotamian war chariots, whiteboard markers, ADHD and codependency, hours during the break, we're here weekends!, hanging indents, article searches, drag show bans, and we are not the post office (Google Business is wrong).

Also going to need to read this:

Süner, Ahmet. “The Comic Tragedy of Mere Men and Women: The Ambiguously Distracting Use of Laughter in ‘The Castle of Otranto’ and Its Prefaces.” Atlantis, vol. 38, no. 2, 2016, pp. 11–26. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/26330.... Accessed 9 Oct. 2026.
