Matilda of Flanders and Edith Swan-neck lived very different lives. One was a duchess, the other was the handfasted wife of Harold II. Matilda's fate was to be queen of England. Edith's was to quietly disappear

Do we have a treat for you!
It's always a pleasure to chat with Sara Cockerill!
We had a fascinating discussion about Eleanor of Aquitaine, probably THE most famous - and remarkable - medieval woman in history

Great post! It's my local - having been giving tours there since the early 90s. To be fair, Scott was right about the Saxon kings - it was held by Harild II until October 1066. Geoffrey of Monmouth also has it owned by Ambrosius Aurelianus, though he can be a tad unreliable.

Oh, and she's in the last chapter of my Nicholaa book

@thehistorybits.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 12:11 PM

I covered her in Heroines of the Medieval World and Ladies of Magna Carta. And I haven't ruled out returning to her - contemplating a book on the countesses of Lincoln.

Death of Alice de Lacey. Alice was kidnapped twice, married to Thomas of Lancaster and imprisoned by Hugh le Despenser the Younger, who threatened to burn her at the stake if she didn't give him all her lands.

It's Lincolnshire Day!
And to celebrate, here's 10 - well, a few - things you may not know about Nicholaa de la Haye. Lincolnshire's very own heroine!

A favourite medieval princesses is Joan of Acre, daughter of Edward I. Born in the Holy Land, she lived with her grandmother in Ponthieu, then married Gilbert de Clare. When he died, she chose her second husband for herself...

Death of Empress Matilda, Lady of the English. The empress had fought against King Stephen in the 19-year conflict known as The Anarchy. The crown was always just beyond her grasp. She won in the end - her son, Henry, was crowned in 1154.

New Episode!
@derekbirks.bsky.social and I take a deep dive into the life of Elizabeth Woodville, queen of Edward IV. Elizabeth has been vilified, blamed for everything.
Even called a witch!
But is that fair ?
