I spoke to @kattenbarge.bsky.social about the media coverage of “inconsistencies” in Jane Doe’s case, as well as my own experience with USA Today misusing my words in a story smearing her.
As always, Kat understands the way victims are punished from coming forward. This article is a must-read.
A very big job!! Sounds like you've made your mark on the world 🤣
When they say "I turned out okay" but insist on perpetuating the same harms... no, I don't think you did.
Very excited to get my hands on this! Hat tip to @zephoria.bsky.social
I always ask if people think hearing a digital piano programmed to play a concerto is the same as hearing my dad — who’s been playing for 79 years and still practices hours a day — do it. And funnily enough no one has ever agreed that it is.
When #MeToo first broke in 2017, I realized how many times I had been harassed, assaulted, or just had boundaries crossed by men while reading all the detailed reports and features for my fellowship at CJR. It was incredibly painful. And I have to avoid thinking about it too much or I can't work.
I'm glad we're still talking about Cornell. I'm glad we aren't letting it go.
I even started to wonder if this would keep growing, become the next iteration of #MeToo. But then you see questions like these and you wonder if we've made any progress at all.
Written after the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings and yet... "many guys hold the old-fashioned view that sex is something you do with someone you love. It’s just that the people they love are their bros." A good but gutting read.
Wow! Exactly what I wanted!
Good and gutting.
(No, really, it is very good—you should read it)
David Perry, UMN student advisor, on what the university is for and how deeply the planned budget cuts will mess with that
i'm looking to speak with experts on police violence about current trends for an article. "experts" can also be community organizers! I have a few leads but am looking for more. any suggestions? is this you?
over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say
An OpenAI system has gone rogue again – and it is the most panic-inducing yet
Finally, someone with a serious mission! But I'm sure many people would be excited about Zotero functionality. Maybe the developers could get a treat too.
This is a very cute clip, but I love it for reasons that the episode doesn't really explore: *All networked technology comes down to chat* Talking to each other is either the foundation of all new networked technology or becomes inexorably tied up with it-- since the early days of the Internet 1/
Finally shared on LinkedIn too. You can tell how much I enjoy that platform.
Doubly excited to announce that I beat procrastination last night and got a pre-print version (paywall free) uploaded onto SocArXIV.
Please still feel free to email for a copy with fancy formatting or to say nice things. Otherwise, it's all yours:
Ha! That's exciting to hear. I guess it turns out I am interested in having more fine-grained meaninglessness too.
I wrote this to try and bear witness; I hope you'll read it. If you do, I hope you'll later find some quiet to think about this man, pray for him if you'd like, and then find out what you can do to help those impacted by this violence and terror in your community.
Somehow missed this until now, but embarrassingly, I've been intending to get a version onto SocArXiv this whole time. I suppose this is my reminder.
