Shigellosis leads to around 242,000 antimicrobial resistant infections in the United States every year. But an oral vaccine has demonstrated great efficacy in reducing infections of the strain most dominant in the country.

During an eruption, occasional lava fountains aren’t unusual. But it’s rare to see repeated fountains — distinct bursts separated by minutes to weeks — during a single eruption.

What if cells that normally pass along visual signals could detect light? Gene therapy and special goggles helped some blind patients spot objects or find doorways. Reading words and recognizing faces remain out of reach.

Earthquakes frequently trigger rock falls. Now there’s solid evidence marsquakes can send boulders tumbling, too.

Kagan and Soai’s discoveries have changed how chemicals, particularly drugs, are manufactured. The Nobel Prize in 2021 was also awarded for improvements in enantiomer production — then, for making the process more environmentally friendly.

In the ‘80s, Kagan found that adding a bit of an unwanted enantiomer to production caused an asymmetric reaction, creating more of the correct mirrored variant. Two decades later, Soai designed a process that produces the correct enantiomer more than 99 percent of the time.

Because nature favors one mirror image over the other, manufacturing the wrong kind can ruin the effects of drugs and other chemical products — and sometimes even cause harm. www.sciencenews.org/article/refl...

Organic chemical reactions in the lab often produce what are known as enantiomers: two versions of a single molecule, each the flipped mirror image of the other. This property in molecules is called chirality. www.sciencenews.org/article/alie...

Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai have won the 2026 Nobel Prize in chemistry for manipulating the production of "mirror image" molecules.
