“Voters should rank only those whom they support.”

@helenjung.bsky.social & @oregonian.com ed board, endorse as you see fit but this isn’t true! Our system also gives voters incentive to rank their lesser evils further down. www.oregonlive.com/opinion/2026...

“Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months.” (J.G. Ballard, High-Rise)

(The Fairport version of “Nottamun Town” is also very good.)

For a recording/performance, Odetta’s cover of “Masters of War,” which Dylan lifted the melody from “Nottamun Town.”

I kind of think formally sex-segregated institutions are just a bad idea in every educational context

Really any voter guide can be helpful, I would just treat them all as informing *how to rank* candidates against each other, rather than sorting them into undifferentiated yes/no piles.

@binnig.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:12 PM

Yeah to be clear I generally like Portland for All and think they're giving good information; I'm picking on them in part because they're in general a serious & strategic source despite making a specific mistake here.

@binnig.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 4:23 PM

Yeah I think that’s the right answer given their preferences. Granted that messaging nuance is hard, but I don’t think the message we give to the public should be the opposite of the advice we would give to a friend.

I don’t speak it but my first impression of standard Indonesian was that it’s admirably logical and meets most of these criteria. (Maybe in part because it’s a lingua franca among speakers of other languages?)

People who trust Nick’s politics should vote this order

@binnig.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:37 AM

Anyway the good news is that following my argument here doesn’t depend in any way on determining whether I’m a good or bad person.

(Will note in this context that your interlocutor did not do the one thing you’d want to do if you prioritized blocking Gonzalez, which was ranking every other viable candidate.)

but it is likely that progressives will break the 25% threshold in every key race, which means a fraction of your vote will go to your lower ranked candidates. and it is not hypothetical that it could end up influencing those races: progressive reallocations helped put zimmerman above arnold in 2024

@binnig.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:22 AM

On incumbency, I would mostly expect incumbents to lose if & when they lose the support of the people who supported them last time—which is fine. Being potentiallyless swing-y than all at-large council seats isn’t a bug, imo.

@binnig.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:19 AM

& the mayoral election system (instant runoff) I think is genuinely simple & intuitive (it’s like a series of runoffs). The council system (single transferable vote) is genuinely kind of confusing on the back end, but the way you vote (rank your choices in order) is straightforward.

@binnig.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:14 AM

Tbh I think “rank your preferences in numerical order” is pretty simple! It’s frustrating to me that people keep looking for some secret alternative strategy; that’s why I keep posting about it.

@amb.fyi , if a friend asked you personally what they should do, and they thought Morillo and TKL were good, Leon was eh, Novick was bad, and Torres was a disaster—

Would you recommend that they vote (A):
1. Morillo
2. TKL
3.
4.
5.
6.

Or (B):
1. Morillo
2. TKL
3. Leon
4. Novick
?

Looks like it’s twice as long with fewer jokes, though.

@binnig.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 11:44 PM

Yeah, this is a problem (and a consequence of Portland only allowing 6 ranks). If there are six candidates you like and you don’t know which ones have a chance it’s fine to fill your ballot that way.
