OTD: COURAGE LEAGUE 1992 Tigers 21 (Potter 1t, Liley 1t 1c 3p) West Hartlepool 8 Welford Road, 10 October The visitors were relegated at the end of the season, but would spend five years in the top flight in the 1990s. It was the days of home change kits. And what a kit.

The summer of 1988 would see him winning two England caps versus Australia and Fiji. Evans would join Coventry as club captain in 1992, but rejoined Tigers in 1994 for eight additional appearances. His last game was against Northampton in September 1995.

The winger would start the 1983 John Player Cup final and miss only two games in the 1987-88 Courage League championship season. In 1986 he represented England in the Sport Aid International Sevens tournament in Cardiff

Joining from Hinckley, his debut was at Saracens in October 1981. Evans made enough of an impact to play for The Rest in an England trial in 1982. He would score 170 tries for the club, positioning him in second place on the all-time list behind Percy Lawrie (206).

BARRY JOHN EVANS Born on 10 October 1962, flying Leicester and England winger, and record post-war try scorer, Barry Evans.

Should be 152 appearances. As a bonus fact, when Hanro was in Jenno’s Coffee Shop with the other players, he was the one who returned all the chairs to their original tables. A proper gentleman.

OTD: RUGBY WORLD CUP 1999 Italy 25 Tonga 28 Welford Road, 10 October Both sides would concede 101 points in games against New Zealand and England respectively, so this tight affair may have been a relief. Attendance: 10,224.

After 149 Leicester appearances he returned to South Africa with the Blue Bulls this summer.

Liebenberg was a try scorer in the 2022 Premiership final triumph, and became club captain during the 2022-23 season. His final Tigers game was against Northampton in June 2026.

A South Africa U20 captain, he was recruited from the Bulls and made his Tigers debut in September 2019 against Exeter. The back rower was named as the club’s Player of the Year in 2020-21.

HANRO LIEBENBERG Born on 10 October 1995, Hanro Liebenberg played for Leicester between 2019 and 2026.

HAPPY FIJI DAY! It’s already Saturday morning in Fiji, let’s start the party. Fiji first visited Leicester in 1970, the Tigers first played Fiji in 1973, visited the islands in 1980, and Waisale Serevi was the first Fijian to play for the club in 1997. More would contribute to Tigers history.
