I have to suffer the mental torture of Capital Radio on the radio at work - the same dozen songs on perpetual rotation for weeks on end. A new artist is never going to break through this way unless they have been 'selected' by the industry.

That's exactly it! I can't remember anything about the Champion show itself, but do remember the sinking feeling looking at the BBC lineup during the summer hols back in the '70s - The Flashing Blade, Robinson Crusoe, etc.
