Final project for my art class

We weren't allowed to use any color for our assignments so I'm DYING to color this one. I'll probably have that done sometime next week :3

As mentioned in the post itself, we weren't allowed to use any color for this class which really killed me. However, I think it really helped me to understand not only the importance of color in art, but also just how important value and shading is too.

Each assignment we did really challenged me. I'm so used to drawing nothing but furry portraits that I never really thought about how little I tried other things like perspective, landscapes, realism etc etc. It sort of got me thinking about how my art could be improved by adding those simple things into my drawings. I'll probably end up doing some background practice soon.

My teacher has a master's degree in fine art, and has spent most of his career working in the art-world, be it in art exhibits or teaching or performance art. It was intimidating. Up until I started the class, all of the people critiquing my art were pretty "amateur" compared to the skill and knowledge this guy had. I think he got a kick out of me. I don't know if that was because of how weird my art was compared to the other students, or if he genuinely had interest in my art. Who can say.

Most of the people in my art class were much much much better than me and had been doing it for all of their lives. Towards the beginning of the class there were a few students that were worse than me but they ended up dropping the class. It was kind of sad to see. It was kind of terrifying, that class, having to draw around people who were so much better than me, but I think I learned to face my fears that way. None of them were harsh. They all had useful criticisms, and I learned so much just by seeing them work and seeing the wonderful art they made.

When my art teacher told me that he was okay with me drawing a furry for the final project, I was ecstatic. It's the one thing I'm decent at in art, and I really wanted my final project to be something I could really put my heart and soul into.

A parody of the semi-famous obama "hope" propaganda. Instead of obama it's a furry. Wow.

This isn't meant to be political in any shape or form, nor is it supposed to have a hidden meanning. It's just a silly shitpost. I always liked the parodies people made of the original, and I've been wanting to make my own for a while now. I was just too bad at art before to even attempt such a thing.

Why did I make it say 'perish'? I dunno. I thought it was funny.

The original uses horizontal blue lines in addition to the dark blue and light blue solid colors for shading, but I honestly couldn't be bothered doing that. I think it looks okay enough without them. I'm sure most of you probably haven't seen one of these in a while, so hopefully it's a little nostalgic for you!

Remember kids, NOBODY is immune to propaganda.

Petrich! A half-black half-white fox character with spots and two tails. Her ears, feet, and hands have inverted colors from the rest of her body, and the tails are inverted from one another as well. One eye is rainbow-colored at the other is black and white with an 'x' for a pupil.

When I was making this, Piteon kept asking me questions about the character, like what the reason for her eyes being the way they were was. I didn't really have an answer for him. When I make characters like this it's never that intentional or deep.

I like to think it means something though. Something that came from my subconscious mind and made its way into the character.

I've struggled with severe depression for my entire life which has left me feeling half-dead most of the time. I suppose that made its way into the character. Half of me is inspired, passionate, and hopeful. The other is pessimistic, anxious, and passively suicidal. I've come to accept the cruelty of life, and with that I have been able to see the beautiful parts of life too, but still I carry with me all of those awful memories of feeling like I deserved worse than death. It's a part of me, and I try to make the most of it. It makes me grateful for the days I am happy, and allows me to welcome the dark days with open arms, as if I was meeting an old friend. One eye sees the beauty of life, and the other welcomes the pain. Amare vitam et memento mortis.

none of that was intentional when i made the character but the retrograde-explanation kind of makes sense to me. and the end of the day it's just a fun design that I resonate with.
