I almost forgot that today’s the 30th anniversary of the late Ted Turner’s company (owner of Hanna-Barbera, New Line Cinema, CNN, Cartoon Network, pre-1986 MGM films, and the 30s and 40s WB color cartoons) merging with Time Warner. Probably the least crappy WB merger to date.

Might seem unrelated and off topic but let me remind you all that Hollywood made a big fuss over a cartoon skunk when there is truly a real systemic issue that unfairly decides what should be seen.

I genuinely mean this. I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people.

Any of the pre-1964 shorts where they use Speedy with Sylvester or with different villains, I can only take. There’s Señor Vulturo, there is the short where he rescues Pablo and Fernando from an alley cat, and there’s the short with Jose and Manuel as Slowpoke packs a surprise at the end.

Speedy being handled between Freleng and McKimson is definitely striking. Nice to hear Friz Freleng and Art Leonardi on the commentary tracks. With Sylvester, you get what you expect. Without him, they shook things up.
