We honor Wisconsin's Indigenous communities and the fight for cultural preservation, sovereignty, and justice.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Today we honor Native Americans (and not that other guy)Why Indigenous Peoples’ Day? Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an effort to tell the truth about our country’s history. Since the ‘90s, universities, localities, and states have formally replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ or Native Americans’ Day.
The fight to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day began much earlier — led by Native American and Indigenous people advocating for our voices to be heard – and the movement has grown larger every year.Wisconsin, home to at least 12 Native nations, declared this day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in October 2019. Many Native communities advocate to recognize this day on the local and state level. Members of the Ho-Chunk Nation for Wausau and Marathon counties to establish their own Indigenous Peoples’ Day in May 2019, and students of the Indian Community School in Franklin had advocated for the resolution for many years. We continue the fight alongside our partners to defend the rights of Native American and Indigenous people to vote, speak and protest freely, live our lives free from discrimination and criminalization, and live without government abuse of power

In our latest report, we identified 76 ways that the Trump administration's mass deportation agenda is making our democracy increasingly unrecognizable. We've also laid out the roadmap for the next Congress to investigate this onslaught on our civil rights and course correct.

The midterm election is coming on November 3, and there are three binding referendum questions on the ballot. We oppose the anti-equity amendment, Question 3. If this amendment is passed, it would eliminate the equity-based civil rights gains Wisconsin has made over the last 60 years.

What role should sheriffs play in federal immigration enforcement?

That question is central to sheriff's races in Sauk and Winnebago counties, where Democrats are campaigning to end participation in the federal 287(g) program.

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley’s proposed budget does not include funding for Flock surveillance cameras. Under this proposal, the $140,000 currently allocated to Flock would be redirected to Legal Aid Society's Right to Counsel program. We applaud this.

This year during Banned Books Week, we’re celebrating the freedom to read whatever we choose – free from government interference.

Yellow background with scattered books: “Happy Banned Books Week!” followed by a list: Read a favorite banned book; defend freedom of speech in schools; show appreciation for librarians and educators; remind community that books expand perspectives; get another banned book from the local library. Banned and challenged frequently since its 1960 start. At least 57 people have died in immigration detention since 2025, more than double the number of deaths recorded from the previous 4 years combined. As egregious as the current mortality rate is, it still does not include an accurate death toll resulting from the neglect in ICE detention centers.

All automated license plate reader cameras will be removed from county parks. These cameras effectively created a government-accessible record of who came to a particular park on a particular day. This is another win for the movement against constant warrantless surveillance of our communities.
