Omg. Horrifying story at the link, from the not-so-distant past. (I'm not sure we're doing so much better now, tbh)

@abandonedamerica.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:55 AM

Yep. It's why I don't really believe in ghosts, because I've never seen any at some astonishingly bleak places. The glasses in the morgue still were pretty horrific even without any spirits to go with them.

Things are still pretty bad, unfortunately, although this is hard to beat in terms of how sad it is

@abandonedamerica.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:15 AM

Love it, we are nearing concrete plans for Presidents Park II

The auditorium of the abandoned Irem Shrine in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Opened in 1908, the Irem Shrine was a central part of the city's cultural scene. By the late 1990s, however, there weren't enough funds to maintain the building, and it was left to decay. More at www.abandonedamerica.us/irem-shrine

Oh good, glad I was on the same page. You are 100% correct. Eugenicists were proud of their disdain for people that they considered inferior. There is a significant amount of overlap in American asylums and institutions and Hitler's final solution. Example: www.appalachianhistory.net/2019/03/bett...

If I'm reading this correctly, yes, even though language norms do change (for example, "idiot", "moron", and "feeble-minded" were all considered clinical terms) there definitely was not a single care given to treating people who socially were considered inferior with any dignity or respect

A rotting room in the District of Columbia Children's Center at Forest Haven in Laurel, MD. Forest Haven was infamous for appalling neglect leading to what was called “the deadliest known example of institutional abuse in recent American history.” Read more at www.abandonedamerica.us/forest-haven...

Well the funny thing is if I was, I'd have left all the busts out in a field to rot

@abandonedamerica.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 3:34 AM

Yes, it does seem rather predestined in hindsight

@abandonedamerica.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 3:25 AM

If you're ever in Virginia, you can. I believe they still offer limited tours of it if you search for the website

I feel like for this park to have had any shot at working, they needed rides. The Lincoln Log Flume, Reagan's Trickle Down Water Park, Carter's Play Area for Little Peanuts, Herbert's Stock Market Plunge. You know. Have some fun with it.

Me: Mom, can we have US Presidential Busts? Mom: No, we have US Presidential Busts at home.

@abandonedamerica.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 6:47 PM

Wow, that's quite the noggin. All stone too, by the looks of it!

Presidents Park opened in Virginia in 2004, but went under only a few years later in 2010. The 20-foot tall busts of US presidents that were the park's main attraction were moved to a rural field, where they were left to decay. More at www.abandonedamerica.us/the-presiden...

The hallway of an abandoned school in Gary, Indiana. After the devastating loss of its steel industries and white flight into the suburbs, Gary became synonymous with American urban decline. More at www.abandonedamerica.us/gary-indiana

I have not but it sounds fascinating!

@abandonedamerica.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 6:30 AM

Will do, thank you! There was so much more I wanted to see, I really do hope I can travel there again. If you'll forgive my website being mid-update and a bit rough, some of my photos from Greece are here www.abandonedamerica.us/abandoned-gr...

I hope you never look into Philadelphia's historic preservation tragedies, for the sake of your faith in humanity. Despite being a UNESCO World Heritage City, developers have tried to wreck every single thing of architectural significance they can

@abandonedamerica.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 6:01 AM

Oh man, that's everywhere. Demolition by neglect is the best way of getting rid of pesky historic buildings that otherwise communities would want to save
