Nap technique, sea otter edition: wrap yourself in kelp so the current can't carry you away, float on your back, keep your paws out of the water to save heat. They rest about 11 hours a day, sometimes in rafts of up to 60–100 otters (UC Davis).

Friday check for freelancers: does every invoice you sent this week have a due date?

Invoice Maker puts Due next to Issued, and the home screen splits Outstanding from Paid.

Twin Phone question for the people who actually use second numbers: Right now it’s calls + rates. Should we add a simple messenger between Twin Phone users, or is that the wrong direction? Or is the better path B2B telecom + eventually our own SIMs? What would you actually use? twin-phone.com

16 October is World Food Day, the date the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was founded in 1945.

Here's a field of wheat with chamomile, because that's where most lunches start.

Riesling country. Along the Mosel many slopes are too steep for machines, so the grapes are picked by hand.

The record holder, Bremmer Calmont, is usually billed as Europe's steepest vineyard.

Word of the day: granja. In Barcelona it's a milk-and-chocolate bar, not a farm.

Granja Dulcinea, Carrer Petritxol, since 1941. Global City Intelligence lists it for the room type itself.

https://www.globalcityintelligence.com/places/barcelona/ciutat-vella/granja-dulcinea/

Global City Intelligence place page for Granja Dulcinea, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona: a granja, a milk-and-chocolate bar, on Carrer Petritxol, trading since 1941 with its original panelling and counter. 'Why it matters': the granja is a Barcelona building type.

Heating-season question: which one costs less to run?

Pocket Manager's energy calculator has a Comparison tab: two gadgets, energy use, running cost and efficiency side by side.

Snowy owls don't like trees. They look for wide-open ground with a vantage point: tundra in summer; in winter fields, dunes, even airports.

Then they wait, sometimes for hours, before a short flight (or a run) to pounce on a vole.

Bookkeeping detail that matters more than it looks: in Cash Workspace's late-payment tracker, a Draft is "not counted as outstanding, so it never inflates what you are owed".

Five states only: draft, sent, overdue, paid, cancelled.

Cash Workspace late-payment tracker status cards: Draft, started but not yet sent, not counted as outstanding so it never inflates what you are owed (highlighted); Sent; Overdue; Paid, with partial payments keeping the remaining balance visible; Cancelled.

Job-hunting evening tip: keep one résumé per kind of role, not one that you keep rewriting.

CV Resume works with profiles, and each card shows a completeness bar, so you can see which version is still half-done.

iPhone only for now: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6745150815

CV Resume App Store screenshot 'Create profiles' with a magnified profile card: a résumé for Tony Smith, Product Manager, with an Apply Template button and a progress bar reading 100.00% filled.

Chicago skyline at dusk, and a building you won't find in it: the Home Insurance Building (1885–1931), 10 storeys, often called the first skyscraper. Its metal frame meant thinner walls and bigger windows. During construction the city halted work to check it wouldn't fall down.

Travel tip that saves a refund request: dial *#06# on your phone. If you see an EID listed, it's eSIM-ready.

The second condition is on the same eSIMky help card: the phone must be carrier-unlocked.

https://www.esimky.com/en/help

eSIMky help card 'Device compatibility': your phone needs eSIM support and must be carrier-unlocked; most flagships from 2019 onward qualify; dial *#06#, and if you see an EID, you are eSIM-ready.

Mount Rainier at first light. 14,410 feet, an active volcano, and per the National Park Service the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S., spawning five major rivers.

Have you seen it on one of the days it "comes out"?

A design decision I keep defending: AsteriaStar shows every event in UTC.

Local rendering would hide which day something actually falls on for you, and it would mean asking where you are. The site does neither. You do the conversion, knowing exactly what you convert.

https://asteriastar.com/events

AsteriaStar events page, dark theme. Paragraph: times are UTC throughout, because an instant is the same everywhere and a local rendering would hide which day an event falls on; nothing here knows or asks where you are; computed instants are checked against NASA, the US Naval Observatory and JPL Horizons.

Khongoryn Els, southern Mongolia: about 965 km² of sand inside Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, with crests commonly around 80 m. The local name means "singing sands": slide down a slope and the grains hum. Why exactly is still argued over.

Why does a dog age calculator ask how big your dog is, while the cat one doesn't?

Larger dogs tend to age faster than smaller ones; in cats that pattern is far weaker. FaunaHub explains it on the page and calls "x7" an oversimplification.

https://faunahub.com/tools/pet-age-calculator

FaunaHub pet age calculator page. Highlighted paragraph: the widely repeated 'multiply by 7' rule is a long-running over-simplification; aging varies by species, size and breed. Below, an FAQ answer: larger dogs tend to age faster than smaller dogs; in cats this pattern is far weaker, so dog calculators ask for a size category.

Lunchtime biology: why goats have sideways rectangle pupils.

A 2015 Science Advances study: when sheep, goats, horses, deer and moose lower their heads to graze, their eyes counter-roll so the pupils stay near-horizontal.
