question for brooks: what if they are, literally, nazis?

Ddriftglass@driftglass.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:59 AM

"Jon Ossoff, my advice to him is, if you start calling your political opponents Nazis, maybe it's time to shut up. That's just not what we do here in this country." -- David Brooks, this evening. Remember, Brooks still gets very handsomely rewarded by the fossilized media for saying shit like this

He does sorta get at the weird coalitions trying to resist that one skate park!

@advaitarun.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 2:43 AM

I didn’t think it was noticeably NIMBY tbh. The bits on city of yes were more ruminating on how change in a community is inevitable, even for concrete itself, and I think Wilson is moreso paying attention to people being weird/interesting in this milieu than he’s endorsing any of the NIMBYs views

dc statehood is non-negotiable after trump's actions in his second term. republicans despise the people of the city that hosts them, and there is little reason to think that, now that the seal is broken on treating them as an occupied population, a next republican president will be more restrained

History of Concrete was an incredible movie and @carolynw.bsky.social wrote about how it approaches the art of storytelling itself (in the age of AI):

Soldiers positioned at voting locations is not legal behavior. These are Mississippi National Guard troops at a DC ballot dropbox yesterday. We demand the governors of Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia get your soldiers OUT NOW.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

Decades of disinvestment and austerity is actually a significant reason why stuff is so expensive! We don't invest in in-house staff, fund projects piecemeal, and do everything as a one-off, so everything costs more.

For all I've said about AI financing, I admit I'm still figuring out what the future of AI even is. So I couldn't be more excited to work with @rooseveltinstitute.org, @matthewus.bsky.social, and Danica to scope out possibilities for our shared future!

Below is a thread of my prev writing on AI:

Excited for all that's to come alongside @rooseveltinstitute.org! :)

There's a LOT more to explore about the future of AI. I've been reading a lot of Farrell, Weatherby, Recht, Max Read, and Morozov recently to get a sense of what a progressive cybernetics could really look and feel like. I want to figure this out before the Broligarchs decide for us...

My very first substack post was about interacting with AI art and how... weird? uncanny? it all felt. I took a pretty draconian posture against LLMs here, back when their capabilities were a lot stupider. But, even now, I don't know if I was wrong to do so.

I am also not sure what to make of arguments that AI turns information into a commodity. It's a marketing pitch; I'm not sure that's really how it works. If information isn't a commodity, then what IS it? And what does it mean for our understanding of AI?

I have critiqued how politics is using and is being shaped by the demands of AI. The "Reindustrialize America" conference last year really had me worried. For now, AI seems moreso the calling card of reactionary futurists than something inherently liberatory.

I have written about all this independently as well. Presaging my Dissent piece, after Bubble or Nothing, and inspired by Zola, I vibed out about the nature of speculation itself in this contemporary context.
