For speakers at @visualisingclimate.com 📊

The deadline is October 30, so the session would take place on the 23rd at the latest.

The best summary I've read of Rubio's grotesque speech in Athens: "With a dramatic view of the Parthenon in the background, Rubio delivered 25 minutes of kitsch. It was the classics as learned through memes by a groyped-up staffer" www.unpopularfront.news/p/the-greeks... @lioneltrolling.bsky.social

I've repeatedly had this conversation with colleagues who hold the paradoxically called "objective" view of journalism. They refuse to accept that if you *know* that something is true, you must say so & if you *know* that something is false, you mustn't give voice to those who spread the falsehood.

I’d like to offer something to fellow speakers: A virtual practice round for your talk. 🎤 I think giving a talk is a big gift of time from an audience, and I like the idea of helping each other make the most of that moment.

So I’m offering a 3-hour Zoom session for up to 4 speakers. Each gets 20 minutes to give their talk, followed by feedback from the other 3. We can talk about anything useful: structure, clarity, storytelling, slides, delivery, timing... Whatever you’d like another pair of eyes on.

The programme of @visualisingclimate.com is here and I'm proud to be one of the speakers on "What to expect when designing with climate experts", drawing on 13 years of experience. 📊

The programme just came out, so I created a starter pack with the speakers and organizers of the @visualisingclimate.com conference in Bologna in early November.

I found 38 people. Let me know if I got the wrong person or if I overlooked someone.

The more I think & learn about instantiations of "AI" coming from big tech, the more I believe that we must apply to it an extreme version of the precautionary principle.

Very true! AI allows turning an idea into a visualization without being a coding pro, but there's real risk that we ask AI to just jump straight to the end product ("visualize this data for me"), and the stories hidden within the data never get uncovered. And that subway visualization is amazing!

As you've probably noticed over the years, I've been a big fan and proponent of the Hurricane Threats and Impacts graphics that the NWS has produced for every tropical cyclone near the U.S. since 2015.
Here is the suite of graphics from Wednesday afternoon for #Isaias. These will evolve of course.

A place of honor on my bookshelf

All Ian Hacking's books I've read are this witty and engaging. He wrote extensively about the history of statistics and probability: 'The Taming of Chance', 'The Emergence of Probability', etc.

'Representing & Intervening' (1983) opening paragraph: "Philosophers long made a mummy of science. When they finally unwrapped the cadaver and saw the remnants of an historical process of becoming and discovering, they created for themselves a crisis of rationality. That happened around 1960" 1/2

Same here, although volume is much smaller, 3-4 per week or so

It's the "storytelling" scourge, which is still dominant in too many journalism programs.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead
