The advertisements are too long to quote in full, but the challenge was issued by ‘‘Ann Field, of Stroke-Newington, ass-driver,” to Mrs ‘Stokes, styled the English Championess, “to a trial of the best skill in boxing, for 10 pounds, fair rise or fall.”” Mrs Stokes acoepted the challenge, none too politely, it must be said. She referred to ‘‘the famous Stoke-Newington ass-woman,”’ and went on to say ‘‘the blows which I will present her will be more difficult to digest than she ever gave her ass." Perhaps some sporting enthusiast will be able to tell us result of this encounter.
