BIG NEWS: Up to 75% of global energy demand could be electrified by 2050 with technologies we already have.

Progress is slow and the barriers are mostly political and institutional.

Today we launch the Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator to change that.

The G7 is releasing 100 million barrels of emergency fuel reserves. CSL Director @jeffcolgan.bsky.social tells @time.com that "American consumers are unlikely to see much of a price drop from this policy move unless the diesel share... is very large." Read more on what the experts are saying here.

For @samfankhauser.bsky.social the 2026 heatwaves represent an opportunity to accelerate adaptation: investment made now can reduce both future damage and the cost of retrofitting infrastructure later.

Great news! 🎉

Following the federal government’s attempt to stop the youth and NGO-led climate accountability case from proceeding, the court has sided with litigants, finding no legal or factual basis to throw out the case. Onward.

🚨 Workforces exposed to globalization and decarbonization are often overwhelmingly male. New article at @ajpseditor.bsky.social with @rickyclark.bsky.social and @rkhoban.bsky.social asks how layoffs of these men shape voting: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

AJPS article: "Breadwinner Backlash." Abstract: Low-skilled men have long been vulnerable to globalization, decarbonization, and other forms of economic disruption. When shocks are realized, women often increase their paid labor to compensate for men's loss of income. We study how layoffs of low-skilled men and concurrent shifts in workforce composition toward women affect voting. We theorize that this labor market rebalancing produces “nostalgic” coalitions of men and women that seek a return to male-breadwinner family models. Such attitudes fuel right-wing movements that pledge to protect conservative gender roles. Evidence from local labor markets and voting in the United States over the last two decades, as well as a longitudinal study tracking individual Americans over several decades, support this theory. These findings contribute a new gender-based account of the globalization backlash.

The dark implications of the "medium" climate scenario here seem to be the buried lede of this 🌎 report. We are on a very bad path. "We are unlikely to see +4C by 2100" is a bit like saying that the conveyor belt carrying you towards a blast furnace probably won't get you fully in today.
