A letter to Marx about Xiao Wu "Everything Xiao Wu said, you've said before. But your words are written in the preamble of our Constitution.” On the other hand, Xiao Wu was disappeared

These lines are honestly worse than even a skeptic could have imagined. Straight up gangsters: “We’ve lost the opportunity to say, ‘Oh, let’s make it go away quietly.’” “Because I got access to information they can’t imagine I have, OK? Because I got a lot of friends with the cops.”

“I get you off the f__ing thing with the cops,” Paese told Ramirez in one of the recordings. But, Paese added, “If I wanted to bury you, all I could have told the cops is, 'Hey, you got to do what you got to do.'” These frats are actually organized crime rings

Do not apologize, this is as close as we get to the ideal type of "a bad thing in America/a good thing in China" replies and it deserves to be immortalized

This guy gets it. Honestly I think Trump does too

@elifriedman.bsky.socialOct 17, 2026, 8:50 PM

Also amusing they like Putin but (mostly) not Xi. I get that they're too racist to admire a Chinese guy, but his anti-woke bona fides are sterling. He interned millions of Muslims, built the border wall, kept the gays in the closet, imprisoned feminists, what's not to like?

L@lastpositivist.bsky.socialOct 17, 2026, 7:54 PM

On some level I don't really get why the Western Right like Putin. Isn't he just the head of a rival group of mercantilist gangsters? They seem to buy into some kinda Legitimate Sphere of Dominance theory but I don't get why their ambitions work that way.

This is a case that makes my heart sink. Feng Rui (known as xiaowu) is an activist/writer focused on labour rights and one of my mutuals on social media. We don't always agree on things and sometimes he'd repost my post and challenge my view. He was arrested after

A Chinese social media poster with a portrait of a long-haired man and bold black-and-red headlines. The headline reads, “Labour rights advocate Xiao Wu detained by Guangzhou police.” The text states that Xiao Wu was taken away by the Yuexiu District branch of the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau on September 14 and is currently being held at the Guangzhou Yuexiu District Detention Centre on suspicion of soliciting prostitution. It identifies Xiao Wu, whose real name is Feng Rui, as the operator of the WeChat public account “Qia Pa Si Dong Feng Dian Shi Ji” and a self-media creator focused on labour rights. The background is beige, with a red emblem featuring a fist and rainbow stripes in the upper-right corner.

Wish I was surprised, but I am definitely furious at how my university and Title IX more generally, continually fail survivors

“If this university feels that they will solve this problem by replacing a president, that itself is not good for Cornell’s reputation,” he said, “because I don’t think it’s the right way to address situations like this.” President opposes replacing the president

Mystery solved! Chinese diplomats we're definitely wearing suits in the 90s

If you wanted to run an experiment to see the effect of banning frats, I think you’d want it to run for ~5+ years to have whole cohorts that never experienced the frat system and to allow time for alternatives to develop. Hopeful that this is the start of such an experiment, but not counting on it.

Maybe he was like, "I'm meeting a neoliberal military dictator, I should dress for the occasion."

@elifriedman.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 4:56 PM

Seen this a few times and aside from the obvious point that it's terrible, I couldn't help but notice the Chinese diplomat wearing a pretty snazzy Western suit. I felt like everyone was in Mao suits in 1973, but guess I'm wrong?

We'll see, but in any event would be great if this could raise expectations for BYD workers in China. If workers in France get to elect their own union and have reasonable hours, why not in Zhengzhou?

Also it's shameful how little attention these protests are getting, this is a huge huge deal for the well-being of democracy everywhere

"BJP President Nitin Nabin accused opposition parties and the CJP of trying to destabilise India 'at the behest of foreign forces' without elaborating on who the forces were." Sad for America, we're doing our best to undermine democracy globally and getting ZERO credit for it
