So glad to see The Economist dedicate its platform to Belarusian culture, language and the ongoing Russification of my country. Culture is not a decorative part of national identity. In #Belarus, it has become a political battlefield. It's an important piece: www.economist.com/interactive/...

Could anyone point me to where Putin has actually made progress towards a peace deal? Because all I've seen from Russia are denials, continued aggression, and the brutal destruction of #Ukraine and its people.

@hannaliubakova.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 4:22 PM

Russia wants to destroy Ukraine. Its relentless, brutal attacks are killing civilians in their homes, on buses and in the streets. The world must rally around Ukraine and provide all the military and air defence support it needs. #Ukraine cannot be left to face this alone.

400 people executed in #Belarus since independence. It's the only country in Europe where the death penalty is still retained and can be carried out. I am against the death penalty. A state should never have the power to decide who deserves to live and who deserves to die.

#Ukraine Russia hit Zaporizhzhia with five glide bombs this morning. At least 15 dead, three of them children, more still under the rubble. This came hours after Trump announced a deal to import Russian diesel. Putin reads every easing of pressure as permission to keep killing.

Congratulations to Navi Pillay on the Nobel Peace Prize. 14 years ago, she stood at the UN HRC and spoke about #Belarus - political prisoners, repression of civil society, attacks on media, torture and the lack of judicial independence. Sadly, the story is still being written.

After my Amnesty International Chair lecture in Ghent, #Belarus's state propaganda published a full attack on me, proposing to jail me or strip me of citizenship. They read my lecture very carefully - quoted it, dissected it, studied the photos, even noticed my curls. They care about my words.

My favourite prompt is: "Make my email more polite" - because I'm often too direct. I don't know why people don't use it more. Some emails really need a tone adjustment.

This is the Children's Creativity Centre in Pryluky before and after yesterday’s Russian missile strike. With his army unable to defeat Ukraine on the battlefield, Putin is escalating terror tactics against the civilian population

@hannaliubakova.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 6:07 PM

#Ukraine Appalled by the Russian strike on a bus stop in Kramatorsk. 33 civilians dead, people just trying to get somewhere on an ordinary day. Russia must be stopped. Ukraine needs more air defense, now. This happened right after 22 people were killed in Pryluky yesterday.

#Belarus This is heartbreaking. 71-year-old political prisoner Vaclau Areshka has now completely lost his sight in prison. He is seriously ill, his health is deteriorating - and they keep putting him in punishment cells. An elderly, sick, blind man. This is sadism.

Details have emerged about a Czech citizen who was arrested in #Belarus after returning to visit his sick mother. Vital Dziamidchyk, Belarusian, who had lived in the Czech Republic since 2006, was arrested after crossing the border & faces up to 10 years in prison for donations supporting Ukraine.

Lukashenka was just presented with a new drone.

Let me guess how this works: #Belarus sells drones to Russia, Russia uses them to kill Ukrainians, and the money flows back to help finance Lukashenka's repressive machine. He profits from this war - while helping to wage it.

Very glad that Salidarnasc is publishing a Russian translation of my @amnesty.org International Chair lecture. It's one of my favourite Belarusian media - thoughtful & refreshingly calm. The original is in English. Grateful to Amnesty & Ghent University for the award: gazetaby.com/post/anna-ly...

Pasnou has no family who can independently verify his condition. Lawyers are not allowed to speak freely. This is what the regime's total lack of transparency means: we simply do not know what is happening inside Belarusian prisons - or even whether people are alive.

@hannaliubakova.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 4:50 PM

#Belarus Yesterday, reports emerged that psychiatrist Ihar Pasnou had died in prison. Today, security forces released a short video claiming he is alive. But when was it filmed? The only apparent proof is a calendar showing October 5 on the wall.

On October 1, I received the Amnesty International Chair 2026 from @amnesty.org and Ghent University. I'm the first Belarusian to get it. I'm grateful for the award & for the room it gives me. Nobody owes #Belarus their attention. We have to earn it, keep it, and make it impossible to ignore.

#Russia is now openly threatening Armenia with the "Ukrainian scenario" if Yerevan continues its turn towards Europe. Medvedev is saying the quiet part out loud: Moscow sees a sovereign neighbour choosing its own path as a threat - and is warning what happens when you do.

@hannaliubakova.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 4:53 PM

#Belarus Lukashenka pioneered a dangerous model: jail foreign citizens and use them as bargaining chips. Now Azerbaijan used a jailed French citizen to pressure Paris into blocking EU sanctions. When hostage-taking works, it becomes a playbook.

I am appalled by what happened at Cornell - from the sexual assault itself to the apparent lack of meaningful consequences for those responsible. But I genuinely cannot wrap my head around the university allegedly refusing to refund the tuition of the student who was assaulted.
