A lot of excitement on here about the article in Science summarising the discoveries of @alistairsponsel.bsky.social and Brian Sutton, just published in the Journal of the History of Biology. Some people have asked, so here is what I think they show, and what are the implications:

I absolutely LOVE learning cool new facts about the earth and sharing them with people 🤩

This year at @latitudefestival.bsky.social, @cosmicshambles.com gave me the chance to briefly talk about LLSVPs (Large low-shear-velocity provinces), areas in the Earth’s mantle that may have a 😱 origin…

Are there chunks of a proto planet that created the Moon buried deep inside the Earth? Geologists think so. @seismatters.bsky.social explains on our ’20 Years of Scientific Discoveries’ episode of the The Incomplete Shambles Podcast which you can listen to on Spotify or wherever you get your pods.

In my latest for @undark.org, I compare AI adoption in science to the Ship of Theseus:

"If you swap out every wooden plank on a ship over time, is it still the same vessel?"

I argue that science derives authority from something more than data generation + publication.

It was lovely to hear about Sebastiano's work partly because we got to hear how his institution is legitimizing #SciComm as a pursuit in its own right, and partly because of the cool ways he's engaging audiences with research.
I may or may not have taken notes for our own @scientistsinc.org events 🤫
