Interesting to know, tempted. I’m juggling subscriptions at the moment. Time to go for some of them.
Thanks Mike. What’s not to love about the effects of steam locomotion?! 😀👍🚂
When the York and Scarborough #Railway reached the small village of #Rillington in 1845, it transformed far more than transport. @rwldproject.bsky.social #OnePlaceStudy sog.org.uk/gold-library...
Now you have me considering another rabbit hole! Thank you for your insights. Langton is five miles in distance from Rillington. Also I noticed the spelling variants of de Menyll. There may be a part 2 to this blog. 🤔 #OnePlaceWednesday
It does make you wonder? I’m planning to pursue the original medieval record to discover what happened. Intrigued by the question of authority & whether Henry was able to retain his position despite his actions. Some aspects of human behaviour seem remarkably familiar, even after 750 years! 😉

🥊 Medieval Fight Night in 13th-century #Rillington?
Henry de Menyll reportedly “laid violent hands” on former rector Robert de Okham, then took the Cross.
What had happened between them? The records aren’t telling!

Agreed, and it's a good point to reinforce that there can be a study within a study. It can be stand-alone or part of the bigger family history aspect. #OnePlaceWednesday

Definitely of interest and thank you for thinking of me however, I'm away on half-term duties. Is it recorded?
“Nan Pam, have you got any books about the workhouse? It’s for my homework.” Have I? He’s come to the right house. 🤣 📚 📚 📚
Could this be the grandson who takes up my interest in history? Trying not to get ahead of myself. First, the homework. #OnePlaceWednesday
I may be some time... #OnePlaceWednesday
Really interesting about planting mulberries for silk. We’re proud of ours on Waterside, Knaresborough, reputedly planted by James I. Quite a contrast with the town’s flax and linen heritage! Still fruiting, too. #OnePlaceWednesday
Did the Civil War pass Rillington by?
Not quite. Baptisms become births. Marriage goes civil. Soldiers are active nearby. The King returns & a couple marry “according to the Cannon”. A small Yorkshire village meets national upheaval. #OnePlaceWednesday
