Our strikes against the university's gross financial mismanagement is making international news, showing that our fight is about so much more than saving one institution.

It's about preserving education, research, and labour rights for all of our futures.

The session will include a quick recap on this dispute, as well as outlining the role of the upcoming Special Higher Education Sector Conference (SHESC), before opening up a space to collectively discuss how we might advance this dispute, and thinking through how we might want it to look in practice

by advancing a dispute with the Secretary of State for Education over the issue of funding in Higher Education. This dispute has been UCU policy for two years now, having been consistently backed by multiple UCU branches, including UoN UCU, and voted for at UCU Congress in 2025 and 2026.

These efforts have given rise to the University Rank-and-File network, where union members from across the sector have worked together to develop a response to the escalating redundancy crisis in UK universities...

@uonucu.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 2:34 PM

It will start by introducing the central role that the UoN UCU Reps Network has played in our current dispute over planned course closures and redundancies, before discussing efforts to build a cross-branch, cross-union Reps network in Higher Education nationally.

How can we build our collective power and progress a national dispute over HE funding?

Nottingham bought a campus for £37.5m. Spent £40m more on it. Its own accounts say it could now sell for £14m.

Staff and students are paying for that. 609 jobs. Three departments. More than 40 courses.

That's why we're on strike.

With two days of strike action under our belts, we now begin over two months of continuous in response to our university's gross financial negligence.

Shout out to Notts Solidarity Group for the slides! And @tregenza.bsky.social for the original photos.

67 days of industrial action against course closures and job lossesWhy are staff striking?

The University of Nottingham identified a £30 million deficit after wasting £80 million pounds on consultants and vanity projects such as the
 ‘Castle Meadow’ Campus, which is now unsellable.

 Over 3900 staff received notice of risk of redundancy, with 258 administrative
 / professional services roles to be made redundant.

UCU argues that there is now no financial justification for compulsory redundancies.

 Student recruitment has been strong, voluntary redundancy has increased, staff have submitted extensive alternative proposals capable of delivering further savings and the university itself is saying it now has a surplus.

Management have refused to rule out further compulsary redundancies and are intent on making students and staff pay for their mistakes by closing courses vital for the East Midlands.When are staff striking?

Staff at the University of Nottingham Started striking on 30th September and 1st October, as the University’s governing Council met to finalize restructuring plans.

The two-day strike is now followed by sustained strike Action from 5th October TO 11th December.

Support the UCU: email the vice chancellor to tell her what you think of her plans. and Please consider making a donation if you are able. The Local Branch Hardship Fund is maintained to help strikers who will suffer significant hardship from loss of pay due to striking.No More Course Cuts

Yeah, our students are amazing. Honoured to have them fight along with us!

@uonucu.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:06 PM

Our strike action yesterday wasn't the first step in this fight and it for sure won't be our last. Our members, our students, and our community members know what is at stake. And we will all keep going toe to toe with management until they listen to reason.

@uonucu.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:06 PM

Greatly appreciate your support!

Solidarity with @uonucu.bsky.social members once again striking against compulsory redundancies and course closures.

Such an outcome would devastate workers, students, and our city, as well as UK research.

I urge the university leadership to do the right thing and protect jobs and courses.

You are, quite literally, amazing. It’s incredible what’s being thrown at you - job cuts, course closures and a management who refuse to listen tp any of the credible counter-proposals they’ve been presented with. Your determination to keep going is an inspiration.
