Obligatory Iona whispering in Kallista's ear: "tig. ol. bit—" and then dodging before Kallista can smack her.

Kallista most likes having someone with the guts to stand up to her.

Geni most likes having someone be her intellectual equal, even if it's in different areas from her.

Kallista would be a good team leader but she needs to do something she won't get too injured in. Non-contact sport definitely. Maybe waterpolo.

Geni should probably take up a martial art to get some of that angry energy converted into discipline and focus.

It would probably go something like this:

"...Why are we trying to trick the Devil again?" Dido asked, trying not to gag on the brimstone musk that had filled the area.
"He's the devil," Wendy said, as if this explained everything. "This is what you do with him. He's all about tricks! If we tried to be honest he'd think we were noobs."
“I don’t actually care if the Devil thinks I’m a noob.”
“Well, I do. I’m not gonna have the lord of Hell going around telling people I’m uncool.”
Dido rolled her eyes. “So, how are we tricking him?” A ghastly, spine-chilling growl emerged from where Wendy had drawn the pentagram. “Don’t you think a lot of people have tried to trick him over the years?”
“Ah, but we’re going to approach this creatively.” Her friend smiled as a clawed hand pushed its way from the centre of the rune. “I figure people have offered Satan a bunch of fun stuff, but never anything as fun as—” She rifled through her pockets. “Um. Hang on.”
“As fun as what?” Dido asked, growing less confident as a pair of gristly, red horns rose up before them.
“Hm. I had a card with me. Have you seen a card?”
“What kind of card?”
“A holofoil Charizard.” Wendy glanced at the ground. “Look around, I might have dropped it.”
“You were planning on giving the Devil a Pokémon card?!”
“Not giving it to him, I was gonna kick him in the nuts and swipe it back. Do you know how much that thing is worth—?!”
Wendy stopped, realising that the eight-foot-tall creature that had emerged from the pentagram was listening. It raised a sulphurous eyebrow. She gave Dido an apologetic look.
“Do you wanna try and talk our way out of this or just run?”

#WIPSnips "pulse"

from A Prayer for the Pirate Queen 🏴‍☠️ 💜 ⚓️ currently in third draft revisions

Perhaps it would be easier to deal with the unconscious men than the ones staring accusingly at her from the masts. She stopped at the side of the next victim she came across, a brunette man a little older than her first patient, with few visible injuries. Dropping to a squat, she felt the side of his neck.

No pulse.

And now that she looked properly, the blood was starting to seep out from under him. His coat was absorbing a lot of it, hence her false hope of saving him.

She moved onto the next, then the next, dead, all dead, until a hand at her elbow yanked her back to standing.

Kallista, blood-smeared, with colour in her face and a sheen of sweat from the fighting, regarded her with a quirked eyebrow. "Doctor Philistos? I appreciate your eagerness, but you really ought to stay on the Paxos to receive your patients."

Geni wished she'd still had some cherries to share with Kallista. After she'd left the taverna, away from Kallista's view, Geni had eaten every last one on the way to Philomena's house, not even sharing with with Hermia and Stephania. She'd scoffed them with a lack of self-control that surprised even herself, and all the while she tried not to think of Kallista; of kissing her that first night, of the taste of cherry liqueur. A small part of her indulged in the thought on that walk that maybe, just maybe, this had been a secret message from the captain, something no one else could ever guess at. That had to be her reading too much into an innocent gesture. Kallista probably didn't even remember what they'd drunk that night, or if she did, she'd never have bought a gift of cherries for Geni. Nevertheless, Geni let herself imagine that they were an invitation, if not to anything in the future, then to remember. Whether the memory or the cherries were sweeter, it was hard to say.

Some people might be surprised to hear that about Geni if they have read book 1 and the prequel but lemme tell you, this is Geni in a few years time and she has *been thru some shit* so she becomes a wee bit more ruthless Also faerie bastard is pretending to be Kallista and that's gonna make Geni 😡

Kallista would offer passage on her ship... and then sink the mofo

Geni would offer sex and 100% murk that bitch when they're vulnerable

(There are no demons in my world, but there are faerie bastards so that's close and yes this will be happening)

Quite a bit, in her case. But she's still curious about non-magical medical practices and non-medical magical practice too

Kallista is curious about other cultures and beliefs. In another life she would have enjoyed anthropology (with a heavy dose of decolonisation!)

Geni is curious too, especially about medical and magical things.

And it goes without saying, they're very curious about each other 🫶

#LGBTQWriteAThon line share "mysterious"

from A Prayer for the Pirate Queen 🏴‍☠️ 💜 ⚓️ currently in third draft revisions

The first officer's trusty boarding axe was already in her belt loop. "Care to elaborate on why you're suspecting trouble, Captain?"

Kallista shook her head minutely and muttered, "Just a feeling. Best to stay on our feet, no?"

"Always am."

A glance down confirmed for Kallista that, of course, Iona's boots had mysteriously gone missing again. "I see you're ahead of me there."

"If we're expecting a fight, I want to be at my readiest. And you still haven't bested me in single combat all these years, so ..." Iona backed away, shooting Kallista a salute. "... the boots stay off, Captain." That statement might have been coupled with a smirk at any other time. But not today. Practically bouncing on her feet, Iona loped down to the middle deck and stood ready for deployment.

from Before Queens and Saints ⚓️💜🕊 first drafted, currently awaiting next draft

To her surprise, a light flickered in her cabin. She hadn't expected that. When she entered the cabin, it took her a moment to recognise the source, but soon enough the flower carved into its side twigged her memory.

It was her votive candle from the cathedral shop.

Some helpful person had lit it. She hadn't meant to ever use it, but to keep it forever, a pretty keepsake. Still, it seemed a shame, now it was lit, to put out the dancing flame illuminating the cabin. Some things were meant to be forever. Takurua and his brethren were such things - or if they weren't immortal, their lives were so incomprehensibly long to mortals like herself that for all intents and purposes, they were forever. And of course, some things were meant to be ephemeral, enjoyed only for a short time. This candle was one such thing.

Kallista readied for bed in its mellow light, then laid down, watching it burn for a while instead of going straight to sleep.

It's National Coming Out Day (in the US anyway)! Here's an excerpt from Dido on the Edge (out October 24th) in which our protagonist kinda... doesn't. Maybe a dangerous fantasy adventure will help her work up the courage? 🏳️‍⚧️

“Actually, I did have something I wanted to tell you.”
Amy looked up at Dido’s interruption, appearing a little surprised, though nowhere near as surprised as Dido was at herself. The whole cafe seemed to have gone quiet, so she could only hear the sound of her own heartbeat.
Ohh you’re screwed now.
All the air seemed to have vacated her lungs. She needed some words. Any words would do.
“I’ve been doing some thinking lately,” she started. “About, um, some personal stuff. And it’s been good getting to know you. You’re a really good friend.” Wow, the words were coming quicker than she’d expected. Amy was smiling, politely, clearly not understanding yet. A slight frown appearing on her brow.
Dido carried on. Over-formal, but she had to get this right. “You’re a really cool person. I’m sorry if it feels like I’ve been relying a lot on you lately, I just felt like… Uh, it’s just I feel like I can talk to you, it’s a bit different with you.” Okay, this had gone on too long, she should just say it.
Come on, say it.
Say the big secret and she’ll know.
She’ll know you think you’re a girl, and there’ll be no taking it back and you’ll have to deal with everything that happens after.
Just like that, it all came to a halt. The words wouldn’t come, they couldn’t. As if they didn’t exist. It was like running full speed into a painting of a tunnel. That was it, as far as she could go.Our protagonist, Dido, a slightly scrawny girl with glasses and dark hair sits at a table, figeting nervously. Art by Sophia Curlew

Blair stayed in her room and slept from the witching hour until dawn had broken into morning. She didn’t love the idea of working on less than a full night’s sleep. But the countess might not move around during the day. Which meant Blair would not squander that time. She dressed herself in full hunter garb, armor and weapons ready. And then she headed to the dining hall.

Blair found the dining hall empty, save for Nadia. The Thulean princess sat at a table nibbling at some egg-toast and apple pancakes. She looked up and her gaze met Blair’s. Nadia looked away and down at her meal.

Blair grimaced at this. Was Nadia mad or something else? It didn’t matter. Blair had decided to befriend Nadia, if nothing else. And if possible, Blair would become more than friends with Nadia. Blair found herself blushing at her own thoughts. She put her expression in order, and then approached the table.
“May I join you?” Blair asked.

Nadia’s head jolted up. For a moment she said nothing, staring at Blair with wide eyes. Then she recovered herself and spoke. “Of course, if you would like to share space with me, that is.”

Blair sat down and removed her gauntlets. “The countess would play word games and taunt me. Hester would throw herself at me. And the other girls would gossip to and about me non-stop. You’re actually interesting. You’re a pleasant conversationalist. And you’re stunning. Yes, I’d prefer to sit with you.”

Nadia choked on a bit of pancake, and then recovered with a cough. “People typically don’t talk to me after Hester has given them the warning speech.”

“If I listened to warnings, I wouldn’t have ended up in the mountains of Agartha hunting slavers.” Blair answered.
