Good Morning Blue Sky! Hope you’re all ok? Today I’m currently reading The Caretaker by Marcus Kliewer for a dangerous weekend job. What are you reading at the moment?

"St Trinian’s meets the legend of Faust" in @genevievecogman.bsky.social's brand new, and very entertaining, A Scholar's Guide to Demonology & Other Dark Arts, in which a slightly unprepared Phil takes on the role of Latin mistress at an unusual, windswept school on the Yorkshire moors...

Goodness, it's busy in the bookshop today. Hardly a spare moment. A very busy last day before a week off (which I'll be using to recover, still, from the long tail of exhaustion from glandular fever in September apparently. Yay.)

Annihilation always makes Halloween lists, so I thought I'd do a thread of creepy reads. Starting today with a flat-out modern masterpiece, Max Lury's No Ghosts. Thoroughly contemporary and disturbing grounded in deep characterization, and, in part, outdoing Back Rooms while also its own thing. 1

Indeed! I've not read any qntm other than Antimemetics, so I'd be interested to hear what they're like. Also, I like those covers for the Ray Naylers - different to the ones we have here.

Cool thread with some fantasy debuts I am noting for my tbr list. My own Crawford shortlisting (for Armed in Her Fashion/The Chatelaine) remains something of which I am very proud. It is a cool award and every year it puts at least one future favourite on my radar.

The witch is a creature of weather. Wind-summoner. Drought-breaker. Cloud-reader. Flood-flyer. Mist-wearer. She adapts to it, she adjusts the weather to her favour. It's one of her most vital relationships. She wears it on her boots. She wears it on her skin. – #EmilyCBanting #FolkWitchFriday

There's a new A.S. Byatt novella just out: Cold is a gorgeous fairytale of a frail summer-born princess who discovers her true self when she escapes into a winter night.

Just out this week, it's a beautifully produced little hardback and would make a lovely gift.

Set on the Yorkshire coast against the 1970s blackouts, @amandajanemason.bsky.social's The Dark is a wonderfully creepy new folk horror full of superstition and isolation as Rosie, pregnant and newly moved to the area, tries to settle in and make a home...
