This World Mental Health Day, we’re incredibly proud of the work of our Mental Health and Harm Reduction Critic, @gordjohns.bsky.social, who was named the 2026 Parliamentary Champion for Mental Health by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health.

Today is World Mental Health Day. Mental health is health, yet just 6.3% of Canada's health spending goes toward it. I'm calling for renewed federal funding and support for my Mental Health Parity Act, Bill C-280. Nobody should be denied care because they can't afford it.

As NDP health critic, I met with Health Minister Marjorie Michel to push for stronger public health care, expanded pharmacare, better dental coverage & my Mental Health Parity Act. Health care must be based on need, not income or postal code. Patients before profits. That's what we're fighting for.

This is a good day to ponder what an amazing deal B.C. residents have enjoyed thanks to public auto insurance. Avg nominal premiums are no higher than 9 years ago when J.Horgan was elected Premier, vs 45% avg increase in Canada and 119% in next-door Alberta. Data from StatsCan. #bcpoli

It was 12:32 a.m. in Parliament. I stayed to challenge the Liberals' plan to end an 80-year commitment that supports 3,500 veterans' jobs through Commissionaires. Why put private security profits ahead of those who've served Canada? Our veterans deserve better.

Homelessness in Canada exploded after successive Conservative and Liberal governments gutted public housing spending. The market won't solve the problems it created. It's time for the government to get back in the business of building housing that people can actually afford.

Thanks to CBC and other media covering our fight for fair ferry funding! Ottawa can't claim to care about affordability while BC ferry users face rising costs and unfair federal support. Coastal communities deserve better. We're taking this fight to Parliament! Please watch and share.

Federal cycling policy relies on non-partisan teamwork. 🚴‍♀️

Canada is wealthy, yet 65K people are homeless. Only 3.3% of our housing is non-market, far behind European countries.
I challenged the Liberals: shouldn't nation-building mean ensuring everyone has a home? Housing is infrastructure. Ending homelessness must be a nat'l priority. #NationBuilding

NDP health critic Gord Johns says the lack of news about the fund’s future—which helps communities with their response to the toxic drug crisis—past next spring is an ‘insult’ to groups that are building programs.

Great to join the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs! Five years of teamwork helped double the volunteer firefighter tax credit and advance national wildfire response. Next up: mental health parity and recognition for wildland firefighters. Together, we get results!

Thank you, @gordjohns.bsky.social , for meeting with us again to discuss key priorities for family medicine. We discussed his private member bill C-211. We also discussed immediate ways to reduce the burden of the Disability Tax Credit form.

Mental illness costs Canada nearly 6% of GDP each year. The Liberals call a project adding about 0.6% to GDP “nation-building.” So why not show the same urgency on mental health? Mental health parity and universal access to community care are nation-building too.

Yesterday I tabled e-Petition 7474, signed by 7,700+ Vancouver Islanders and coastal residents. BC Ferries isn’t a luxury, it’s an essential marine highway. Both coasts deserve strong federal support. It’s time for Ottawa to modernize its outdated funding arrangements and fund BC fairly.

@gordjohns.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 2:53 PM

BC Ferries is essential transportation, not a luxury. With PT7 underway, Ottawa must negotiate meaningful operating support and direct capital funding for BC Ferries. “British Columbians should not have to borrow what Canadians on the other coast receive through direct federal investment.”

Very saddened to learn of the passing of ever-genial Colin Gabelmann, Attorney-General in Mike Harcourt’s NDP govt and one of the last surviving members of the wild and wooly Dave Barrett govt that changed the face of British Columbia.
He will be missed.

Thanks to the Comox Valley Regional District & past Chair Will Cole-Hamilton for backing our call for fair federal funding for BC Ferries which carries 22M+ passengers/year, yet gets only about 3% fed operating support. With fares facing major hikes in 2028, Ottawa needs to stop shortchanging BC.

The oil industry is unwilling to pay for this pipeline because even they know the world is moving away from fossil fuels. This project leaves Canadians bearing all the risks of a bad investment without any of the rewards.
