This is a new one. Just resubmitted a manuscript & it got kicked back for having an "iThenticate score higher than the acceptable limit". i.e. accusing us of plagiarism. Want to know what it flagged? The fucking bioRxiv preprint. Do humans not review this bullshit before it's sent out? I hate AI

Good kicker today from @dereklowe.bsky.social: "The tide of slop is rising, and our mechanical friends will unthinkingly pump it up even higher unless we get control of things."

To this day, the @standupforscience.net work I'm most proud of is fighting this study. Please help us stick a fork in it by signing our petition to Congress: www.standupforscience.net/petition-to-...

Our correspondent @mwakley.bsky.social has spent the past week interviewing experts for the full story on this year's #ChemNobel - including Scott Denmark and Dan Singleton, plus Didier Astruc who wrote THAT article for Le Monde in 2001 when Kagan missed out! www.chemistryworld.com/features/how...

Against my (admittedly low) expectations, authors and graphical abstracts seem to be returning to tge ACS journal RSS feeds. Glad to see it!

CDC just closed offices in Angola and South Sudan. Zimbabwe is next; a dozen more may follow. CDC staff overseas support countries to find outbreaks early and stop them before they reach us. Decisions have consequences. Lives will be lost, including American lives.

This is just terrible news. Helen was a very sharp and knowledgeable reporter, and I’ll miss her work:

It certainly appears that she never passed the bar exam in any state or in DC. She should fit in with the NIH Director Bhattacharya who is listed as "a renowned doctor,..." on the NIH website despite not doing any clinical training after medical school and never (it appears) practicing medicine.

Some people, and I don't just mean Trump, have been moving through the world as though they would never face a potential consequence for any choice ever again, because they never planned on losing power. That means they think they can't afford to lose now. There are a lot of desperate moves ahead.

I’m sure they did, and well they should have! But from outside it was all just that big expanse of USSR - the movie dialogue treated it like a separate country, which was just not the case from 1940 to 1991.

We measured it on 42 bad papers, over 12600 prompts.
Failure rate was 93%.

I hear AI can improve road safety so there is no reason these Bros should ever use a seat belt…

Hearing that is really one of those “stare out the window while drumming your fingers on the desk” moments, for sure. Amazingly stupid on multiple levels.

@dereklowe.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 12:02 AM

The mention of someone going to Estonia in “American Hustle”. Sadly, no one in 1978 referred to any of the SSRs as separate countries in that way. While I’m on it, the way the Jersey City characters marveled at the microwave “science oven” rang false, too. They were everywhere by ‘78!

@dereklowe.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 10:34 PM

Yep! Didn’t work the first time, circling back around.

@dereklowe.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 10:30 PM

This is completely insane, like so many other things associated with the all-in AI cultists. Just because it can bang out ugly-but-usable code for you does not mean it’s about to be able to rewire your cells, you fools.

RFK Jr. is complicit in a crime against humanity. Knowingly putting kids in the path of a life-long, life-altering virus is at once a crime and a grievous sin.
