No idea! I guess Amazon has shittier printers??

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 8:13 PM

In case you needed one more reason not to shop at Amazon, look at the difference between these copies of my book.

The left one is from Bookshop.org and the right one is from Amazon. The colors are washed out & not as vibrant as intended. WTF. Boooo! 😑

Fair enough! πŸ˜‚ And ya know what, I'd say that's a huge blind spot in how this culture treats nb people. Like yeah they're not hateful at least, but putting them on a pedestal isn't great either... So far I haven't had much space to explore this in the main story but it may get referenced in book 2.

Goddamn this rocks 😍 "Little sketch" = is ridiculously cool & creepy

Hey man I think there's something behind you (little sketch in between edits πŸ‘οΈ)

very quick digital sketch of a person standing in a doorway. Shadows fall on the upper half of their body. A black cat is sitting nearby, and there's a strange shadow in the background that looks like a spooky ghost thing

"En" is a very respectable pronoun in Na'aqal though!

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:09 PM

There's not, but there are some vocab days if you wanted to jump in and share! Would be happy to see you 😊❀️

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

Ok uhhhh I have more to say about pronouns but I need to do some irl shit so I will return and pick up this thread later πŸ˜‚

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

With animals, unless it's a specific animal that has a known sex, the gender is totally based on arbitrary vibes. Fish - "ya ja'api," uses dza (M) Cat - "de fiia," uses le (F) No real reason, just gotta memorize it. All these pronouns follow the same rules for number & case as the nouns.

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

so for example, the Moon God Xu'ue uses "te" [he] but is referred to as De Xu'ue ("The Moon," gendered F) as opposed to Ya Xu'ue (gendered M). And meanwhile the chaotic trickster god Abaaxita will change from te/dha/en possibly several times within a single story, depending on what they're doing πŸ˜‚

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

as well as many minor spirits & demons (though some of those use child or animal pronouns). "En" would also be used for abstract concepts like courage, justice, imagination, etc. Another fun thing with the gods, btw, is that some will use te/dha pronouns but always take fem/abstract articles:

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

But such people could choose whether they wished to use "te," "dha" or "en" when they came of age around 11-13yo (or change it throughout their lives). Using "en" isn't dehumanizing but puts you in the same category as highly revered nonbinary gods like Vatsu'u (Death) or Milaana (Undying Love),

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

the idea of something beyond gender, something that couldn't be concerned with such petty things. Na'aqal culture recognizes nonbinary people & even views them as being inherently "more spiritual" than others, which means many got pushed into the clergy (so uhh, problematic in a different way...)

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

* "Ab" & "En" would both be translated as "it" in English but have VERY different meanings in Na'aqal. "Ab" is what you use for a toaster. "En" is what you use for a god. You do NOT want to mix these up πŸ˜‚ "Ab" expresses no gender in the sense of not even being alive, while "en" expresses more...

@professoremily.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:01 PM

(Again this is just language shit & me trying to imagine what would develop in this culture, don't take it as commentary on real human gender πŸ˜…) So the third person pronouns are: Human Adult = te (M), dha (F) Human Child = el (M), ul (F) Animal = dza (M), le (F) Misc = ab (M), en (F)*
