But by the time the team finally got to tear down the door of the editing room where he had bunkered himself in, they discovered Ivano Rizzo had disappeared taking with him many masters of the film, including a good chunk of original footage of Herin for which they had no copy, and leaving behind the crude drawings of eyes in the wall. And just like that,
Herin had completely dissapeared from the film.

Originally, the production decided to keep this episode as a secret while the movie was being finished by an unknown director who requested to be credited with the Alan Smithee pseudonym and finally released to a lukewarm reception and eventually forgotten.

Only years after when, through recountings of the crew, the story began to be known through as an industry cautionary tale. In the early 2000s and article was published and is now considered the definitive recopilation of accounts and reconstruction of the story, which led to a surge of interest in the film and established its status as a cult film.

The article also included what is believed to be the last known photo of Ivano Rizzo, joined by one of his supernatural advisers. Taken by an amateur photographer on a boat set to the American continent by the time of his disappearance.

While the transition from Herin to Romano on set was a hard one, all attention on the set would go to the director, Rizzo, who had become exponentially harder to work with.
His known interest in the unknown suddenly became an absolute obsession. He began looking sick and was often seen accompanied by obscure figures like supposed clairvoyants and preachers that he said had become his advisers.

The crew had to deal now with his even more constant outbursts, fired by his newfound psychotic perfectionism, leading him to give Romano a specially harsh treatment that some would even call abusive as it was clear for many on set he resented her being there instead of Herin. Though she wasn’t the only target of his growing irritability, as there was an event where he chased everyone out of the editing room with a stick and bunkered himself there for days.

He was quickly burning through all the already scarce good will he had with the studio, but the final straw was when he delivered a first cut of the film to the producers that, not only was deemed as “incomprehensible”, but many scenes had been replaced by new footage that later would be described as “wildly unappropriated"

Rizzo was officially out.

Tragedy stroke the production of the film on December 26th 1977

While coming back home from a Christmas party, Guaditta Herin's driver made a wrong choice that ended up with their car being crashed by a truck and pushed off a bridge.

The driver was never found nor identified. Many, given the rumors surrounding the director actress duo, believed Ivano Rizzo to be the driver that night but no evidence pointing to that was found. Only her, lifeless in the passenger’s seat.

It is said that Rizzo fell catatonic for at least a day after recieving the news.

No photos of her body after the crash were ever made public.
