Germany’s Climate Computing Center is preparing to store 5 petabytes of U.S. climate data. That’s equivalent to roughly 1 billion high-resolution images. This move will help preserve U.S. climate datasets amid growing questions about their long-term availability.

Hawaii faced two tropical threats within a week in mid-August as El Niño warmed ocean waters around the islands. As a result, the storms had more available heat and moisture to draw from, which contributed to their strengthening.

The Amazon sends roughly 20 billion tons of moisture into the air each day, creating vast “flying rivers” that help sustain rainfall for hundreds of millions of people across South America. Scientists warn that this system could be pushed toward collapse if deforestation exceeds 25%.
