West Country Pacific No 34106 Lydford is working hard on the stiff 1 in 36 climb out of Ilfracombe on 14 September 1963 with a local train bound for Barnstaple Junction.

That’s interesting, there were ex-LNER sheds at both Leeds and Carlisle but this must have been quite unusual. I’ve seen many, many, railway photos over the years but not one of a LNER Pacific on the S&C.

Rather intrigued by this, A1 No 60154 Bon Accord near Skipton on 8 June 1965, with a Carlisle to Stourton semi fitted freight. I assume this can only have come via the Settle & Carlisle line. I'm sure they exist but I cannot recall seeing any photos of ex LNER locos working on that line.

Having had a great run behind No 1450 during the Severn Valley gala at the weekend, I remembered I had recently scanned a photo of one of her surviving sisters, No 1420, seen here at Titley Junction on a goods to Prestigne and Kington in August 1964 the month before services on these lines ended.

In June 1974, a Speedlink freight service from St Blazey to Mossend in Scotland, a distance of over 500 miles, passes along the sea wall at Dawlish headed by Class 45 No D33, under TOPS 45019. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

At Farringdon in April 1973, unrecognisable from today, apart from the roof, a BR peak hours only service from Moorgate to Hitchin, comprised of blue steam heated suburban coaches, is hauled by Brush Type 2, D5595 which became 31 175 and lasted until 1988. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

Swindon-built DMUs were the mainstay of the services between Glasgow, Largs, Ayr, Girvan and Stranraer for close on 20 years. This off-peak service from Ayr to Glasgow (2A20) is pictured passing Beith North on 22 July 1973. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

For many years Sulzer Type 2s, later Classes 24/1 and 26, held sway on all the lines north of Inverness. At Kyle of Lochalsh on 4 September 1971 two are at the station. No D5128, waits with a brake van, whilst at the platform, the 11.08 service to Inverness is preparing to depart behind a Class 26.

Maroon rather than green, to blue is the theme here, 'Warship’ No D838 Rapid at Westbury, waiting to depart during the afternoon of Saturday 22 August 1970 with a relief service from Paignton to Paddington. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

In April 1968, the evening service from Fort William to King’s Cross in the Monessie Gorge, has blue livered Class 29 No D6129 piloting green liveried classmate D6124. Within three years these North British built diesels would have been withdrawn. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

So typical of the era covered by this book, north of Oxenholme in June 1967 1M39, a Perth to Birmingham express, is heading south. The train is hauled by green-liveried Brush Type 4 No D1849. It later became No 47199 and was withdrawn from Crewe diesel depot in July 1987 crecy.co.uk/product/rail....

A stunning and lucky view from our new Railways Remembered title; on 29 April 1967, on Arten Gill viaduct south of Dent on the Settle & Carlisle line, a goods from Carlisle to Leeds hauled by Black 5 No 45373, meets a DMU on a Skipton to Carlisle service. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

Green and blue at Weymouth in July 1966. On the left is blue-liveried Type 3 (Class 33) No D6521, with the stock for a train to London Waterloo, and on the right green-liveried Type 4 (Class 47) No D1922 heads a train from Weymouth to Bristol. Both have been preserved. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

On the approach to Cheltenham in August 1964 a ‘Peak’ class diesel, No D15, with a Newcastle to Bristol service (1V39). These cross country services were the domain of this class for many years. You would be lucky to get a five car Voyageur these days. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

A Birmingham to Glasgow and Edinburgh service (1S61) behind No D374. The picture was taken in September 1964. The train of 13 carriages would divide at Carstairs, with the rear six carriages going to Edinburgh, crecy.co.uk/product/rail...
