There's a lot of confusion around the terms decomp, recomp, disassembly, and port, and people have been asking me which category Super Mario Land Advance falls into.
A small explanation here, in case you're interested: toruzz.com/unlisted/202...

@toruzz.com
Code writer and web designer. I hack old games and rarely play them. I like dem colors.
No translator involved yet, I still have to decide if I'm doing it. I know some Japanese and have the previous TL as a reference, so I might end up doing it myself. Part of why I posted that screenshot was to get Japanese speakers' opinions on the quality/naturalness of my tentative translation.
With the VWF allowing longer text without needing as many text boxes and many constraints removed, I think I should retranslate the game. The TL did great given its limitations, but character tone can change dramatically now. Here's an example for Japanese speakers. What do you think?
Yup, I already coded it in fact 😄 I even sent it to the English translator, but unfortunately he didn't use it. The final build of DX will extend it to at least 6 characters.
I finally have a build with everything: 12px height font, VWF, colored bubbles and labels🥲 Almost everything regarding text is finished!
Yes, it depends on a lot of factors, but it's very likely that it's possible. Graphics would need to be simplified of course, although depending on the game, if there's headroom for layering sprites, it could end up looking very decent.

I actually haven’t seen it yet, sorry 😅 But keep in mind I need a specific composition in a specific format, I can’t simply use an .mp3 file. I already have a good template and an idea of how to replace instruments and add more channels for improvements.
I have yet to decide, but for now I plan to do the same with SFX.
That we just to test the new sound driver, the final release will use an improved version of the original OST
Nah, not literally, I just figured FamiTracker was popular enough that people would understand what I meant. I actually haven't decided yet, but I'm playing around with OpenMPT, Furnace and FastTracker 2. I only need to replace the instruments, add a bit of oomph to the songs, and export to .xm.
I guess it's time to learn FamiTracker... (ignore the temporary options menu)
I'm considering adding a "modern" behavior option to Super Mario Land Advance, including scrolling back. What do you think? Should I make it the default?
My point in all this is that the arguments should be more honest on both sides (and often they aren't), and that once they are, it's easy to understand why it makes perfect logical sense for many people to relativize things. Not everyone has decided to draw the line here, and that's fine too.
We all draw a red line based on our own beliefs, and I understand that for many people, including you, that line is AI. With that in mind, of course it makes sense that you try to advocate for change.
But someone could equally argue that the environmental impact of everyone going vegan would be *several* orders of magnitude more significant than stopping people from using LLMs for hobby projects. And they would be right. So again, in the end it's just a matter of choosing your battles. 4/4
As long as the use itself isn't unethical, I think that's an individual choice about which battles you want to fight. For some people it's AI, for others it's veganism, fast fashion, fossil fuels, etc. And it's not that you're necessarily wrong for focusing more on one thing than another. 3/4
I'm also not specifically saying "phones are bad". I'm saying we live in an unethical society (i.e. capitalism), and being aware of the many things we use that were produced unethically doesn't necessarily mean you have to stop using them or that using them is inherently unethical. 2/4
Ironically, wasting resources to retrain models in an ethical way to get to the same point is arguably unethical when we already have them. Or in better words, I think it's no longer possible. I obviously would have preferred these models to be trained ethically, but that's a separate question. 1/4
Silly example, but can accept your phone (or clothing, chocolate, social media… you name it) was created unethically, and wish you lived in a world where it wasn’t, but still accept that using it is not inherently unethical. This is just a matter of choosing if it is or isn’t your battle.
Mario now always centers himself when entering or exiting a pipe, so there are no more weird clippings. Also... transitions!
