Gotta be in the running for wildest albums covers of the 21st century
Actually wrote about that show a few years ago!
I’ve started a new series called Only Passing Through about cities Bob Dylan has played just once. I started with Las Cruces, NM, and now I’ve done Córdoba, Argentina. Fernet con coca, cuarteto, Evita, and lots of local drama surrounding this show. Dy-lan, Dy-lan!
Can I use autopen?
I wrote the cover story for the new issue of MOJO about Rolling Thunder 1976! I listened to the full box set (yes, all 39 discs) and interviewed a bunch of participants. Alongside ace 1966/2026 pieces by @johnharris1969.bsky.social and Flagging Down’s recent Dead correspondent @bourgwick.bsky.social
Bonus article trying to track down all the old films and Pennebaker footage shown behind Dylan on the giant Desert Trip screens (w/ an assist from @whitecitycinema.bsky.social)
Desert Trip was 10 years ago today! Tons of backstage drama in my interview with director John Hillcoat: flaggingdown.com/p/the-secret...

Bob Dylan has played "Ballad of a Thin Man" 1,361 times live. Over all that time, the song has had a number of different arrangements—from sax solos to spooky echoes to a one-off Swing Revival version. I broke them all down:
Related to them having fun with their one-hit wonder status, their last album includes "Torturing James Hetfield," ripping on him for saying he was happy Metallica was played at Gitmo. They threaten to play him Chumbawamba's Greatest Hits, then a voice in the background croons "There's only one…"
Bruce and Joan singing Chimes of Freedom last night
Oh to live on…Margaritaville…
Joke's on you I'm sick of emails anyway
Has Chris “Snake” Davis ever been on a record with Jeff “Skunk” Baxter?
Then of course there are still the Shadow Kingdom songs he did not incorporate into subsequent setlists
Last-Played-in-2018 has some gems too
Dylan tour kicks off in a couple weeks. Here's a list of songs he last performed in 2019. Which feels like a nice sweet spot for possible surprises—exciting, but still entirely plausible.* (* Will The Circle excepted, that was a one-off with Neil Young)
