This was a really fun conversation! I've learned a lot both from the conversation and from Romain's book

""Let the quest for the [neural correlates of consciousness] accommodate this: Experimentalists in consciousness science should no longer tacitly assume a single stream of conscious representations correlating to a sequence of neural states."

For quick pickles I keep it very simple: brine is 1:1 water:apple cider vinegar, tablespoon of salt and teaspoon of sugar for each cup of brine, heat until steaming or light boil. Add some garlic and dill to each jar, pour while hot I pickle red onions, carrots, cucumbers, and radishes this way

@tommyblanchard.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 2:56 PM

The trouble is, I have to make sure I always eat enough pickles to clear jars for the next week’s batch. It just struck me that I have literally engineered a situation such that, in order to be a good father, I must eat more pickles. This is the most brilliant thing I have ever done.

My 3-year-old absolutely loves making pickles with me. I make “quick pickles” for the week every Sunday, and started to invite him to join me, and he is obsessed. He loves cutting the vegetables, putting them in jars, and the smell of the “pickle juice”. It’s become a ritual for us.

My wife and I alternate doing his bed time. He's a bit of a momma's boy and generally wants my wife to put him to bed, so whenever I tell him it's my turn he says “No, daddy is not beautiful. Mommy is beautiful” Which, yeah, that's fair

@tommyblanchard.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 6:53 PM

My 3-year-old’s favorite word at the moment is “beautiful”. Everything he wants or likes is beautiful, anything he doesn't want is not beautiful.

We've all had the experience of having a solution to a hard problem just "come to us" in a burst of insight when we're not thinking about it. Does this mean our unconscious mind is working on the problem? Not necessarily
