I was particularly interested in the intersections with the values of researchers around open access and publication quality, and the role of institutional repos.

Really interesting (and scary) work by @cameronneylon and Bianca Kramer on trajectories for scholarly publishing costs and open access. https://youtu.be/sQ5MeReCzLQ (via OpenAccess Australasia)

And the costs are going up...

WTF – an estimated $15.08 billion was spent on article processing charges between 2019 and 2025, with most going to the big publishers. (https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2608.16322 via OpenAccess Australasia https://youtu.be/sQ5MeReCzLQ)

First Z-Profile update! I've added Zotero item types as badges in the publication list, and enabled basic filtering on item types. See the new change log page in the docs: https://wraggelabs.com/z-profile-docs/changes/

Billy Hughes makes compiling data about parliaments/governments/parties much more difficult.

@mtchl All good. First redact your bees... 🤣

@wragge.hcommons.social.ap.brid.gyOct 9, 2026, 5:18 AM

@mtchl 404 on the GH link?

New work: Anthophiles uses machine learning to ID plants present in bee observations. It's an experiment in joined-up biodiversity data. https://anthophiles.mtchl.net/ #biodiversity #citizenscience #pollinators #insects

Discovered because I was trying to wrap long labels in Altair to display the fastest and slowest Federal Royal Commissions (number of days between letters patent and final report, data via Parliamentary Handbook)

Two horizontal bar charts jointly labelled "Time taken by Royal Commissions". The top chart is individually labelled "Ten slowest" and lists 10 Royal Commissions sorted by the number of days between letters patent and final report. The largest number of days is close to 1,800. The bottom chart is individually labelled "Ten fastest" and lists 10 Royal Commissions sorted by the number of days between letters patent and final report. All of these were completed within 100 days.

TIL Python has a built-in text wrapping module: https://docs.python.org/3/library/textwrap.html

And if you don't know what I'm talking about, see yesterday's blog post announcing Z-Profile: https://updates.timsherratt.org/2026/10/07/introducing-zprofile-a-simple-website.html

And made sure there were CC0 notices on everything. All of my original code and documentation for Z-Profile is public domain, so feel free to create your own versions.

Also put the code for the Site Builder app (such as it is) in a repo: https://github.com/wragge/z-profile-builder

Here it is! Introducing Z-Profile – a simple website builder for researchers: https://updates.timsherratt.org/2026/10/07/introducing-zprofile-a-simple-website.html

No code, no new software – all you need is @zotero & somewhere to host your site. Please share! #histodons

With the project launched, we now begin the ceremonial closing of the tabs...

I realise that the sorts of folks who follow me here probably don't need any help creating websites. But please share with your less technically-minded colleagues. I've been working hard to try and make the process as simple as possible.

But it's also important for people to have profiles that aren't controlled by institutions or platforms.
