Yes, they're set in the same universe, in fact the same country, but the ships are largely the same configuration as Aubrey's - at least the sailing ships are. There are some new iron monstrosities being assembled somewhere, fuelled by something more fantastic...

the girls are fightinggggggg #Dogwood1 #WIPsnips

“You spoke to my master?” said Wesley. “When?”
   “Your master is…Rowan Donovan?” Owen stepped back from him, horrified expression so fixed on Wesley that he did not see Kenzie’s fist coming before it sent him staggering into the rock wall, nose gushing blood over his mouth and chin. The light from Kenzie’s flashlight swung wildly.
    Owen pushed off the wall and charged at her. “You! Fucking! Lizard person—!” He ran full speed into the heel of Wesley’s palm and the sudden stop took his breath away in a wheeze.
   “ME?!” said Kenzie. “You’re the one who brought Donovan’s henchman into this! We’re as good as fucking dead because of you!”

Good! Game! We love a milestone...

Yes, that's part of it - this is such a spoilery question, I *really* want to answer it in more detail but it would effectively spoil all the major plot secrets in one fell swoop!!

Very interesting to consider the first question from Ella's perspective. She has reason - whether she's considered it or not - to wonder what her lifespan may be, as it's not likely to be the same as her contemporaries...

So she'd probably far prefer to know "when"

But then one day, out of nowhere, they suddenly all turned up with ukuleles, all 20 of them - they had decided on a change of direction. And as someone with an obtuse and probably unfair aversion to the ukulele, this was an alarming and somewhat triggering experience for me 😆 🧵2/2

Your profile bio (crochet and ukulele) has eerie echoes of when I used to work in a country pub that had a huge round table in one corner: a group of ladies held a knitting circle there, it was very cute and they were much valued among the regulars.

Oof, it's so good. Such a great opener. 👏

@camalin.netOct 7, 2026, 3:27 PM

Thank you! Building it up so Maqine can bring it all down with her sledgehammer and F-bombs 😆

@camalin.netOct 7, 2026, 3:05 PM

Thanks! 🥰

@camalin.netOct 7, 2026, 3:03 PM

🤣 Well played!

@camalin.netOct 7, 2026, 3:02 PM

Thanks so much 🥰 yes, I love those long sentences too, just hope my editor does! 😆

@camalin.netOct 7, 2026, 3:01 PM

Thank you! I had better get on with finishing it! 😆

Yes, it feels kind of inherently bleak to me - this is a fuel station, not a place to enjoy

in Dogwood I use a lot of run-on sentences, and pair them with sentence fragments. I'm not even kidding when i say the cadence of my Dogwood voice is not that far off from that one "worst sex scene" that ends with the 2-word sentence "Like Zoro." #LitHodgepodge

CW snip about a deadly flood

CRRKKKTTsshhhhh!
Attention Swallowsaw! The weather service has issued a flash flood warning for the following areas—

Foaming, leaping, crashing, reaching—hundreds of thousands of gallons of wild, raging brown river water exploding out of the pine forest, carrying trees and bits of houses, taking out the speakers, smashing into the rows and rows of parked vehicles, slamming them into one another like dominoes before surging over them, swallowing them, flinging them up and sideways, into the concession stand, against the chain-link fence, all those people scrambling and swept up and screaming, and the river just gushing, filling up the space between the hills before rushing on, chasing gravity.

This is such a good scenario to use run-on sentences in, it perfectly suits a torrent of unstoppable water, as if depriving you of breath

@camalin.netOct 7, 2026, 12:19 PM

I really like intentional repetition, there's a lot of character in it

@camalin.netOct 7, 2026, 11:55 AM

I really like how the word "kitchenette" says so much in a mere three syllables! Leonard Cohen does the same thing in a track on my favourite album of his, perfectly and blandly evocative
