This situation must be resolved urgently for the sake of people who are held in possibly unnecessary detention, people who are facing serious criminal charges without legal advice, and for victims of crimes of who are not seeing cases progress. @lawsocietyireland.bsky.social

Months into the Minister for Justice’s new criminal legal aid scheme, many courts are at a standstill. Vulnerable people feel some of the worst impacts.

We urge the Minister to engage in mediation and to work towards a resolution in the interests of access to justice.

ICCL is one of the 185+ organisations which have signed this statement and we stand in full solidarity with @enareurope.bsky.social. The prospect of Europe's largest anti-racism network losing its core funding raises profound concerns for civil society across Europe.

Training session in Galway City

"What is a legal observer?
Legal observers are trained to monitor, document and film the policing of protests to ensure that gardaĆ are operating within the law.

Legal observers are independent and do not take part in the protest. They focus on the rights of those involved, rather than the issue that is being protested.

They’re also recognised human rights defenders by the United Nations, meaning there is an obligation to permit legal observers to fulfil their role unhindered under international law."Image featuring text:

"Who can be a legal observer?

Anyone who is interested in becoming a legal observer, attends one of our trainings, and upholds the terms of participation joins the Irish Network of Legal Observers.

The training takes place in-person and is about three hours long. Participants learn about the role, their responsibilities and the relevant criminal law concerning the right to protest and public order.

The Irish Network of Legal Observers does not support groups that infringe on or undermine the rights of others."Image featuring text:

"Interested?

To sign up for our next training in Galway on Thursday 15 October, contact Emily Williams on: emily.williams@iccl.ie.

If you’re interested in becoming a legal observer, but can’t attend our next training, don’t worry. We hold regular trainings around the country and advertise them on our website and social media channels.

To learn more about the Irish Network of Legal Observers (an initiative led by ICCL and Dr Illan rua Wall of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, University of Galway), visit iccl.ie."

The law essentially allows State officials to control what questions they will, or will not, answer in UK-led investigations. Investigators will not be able to obtain, test and pursue evidence to establish the facts of the State’s actions, decisions or failures in relation to deaths or incidents.

@iccl.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 3:49 PM

Its provisions fail to ensure that the State will meet its Article 2 ECHR obligations by ensuring that its cooperation with these investigations is independent, effective, subject to adequate public scrutiny, and adequately involves the next-of-kin of victims and survivors.

@iccl.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 3:49 PM

Today we spoke to the Oireachtas Justice Committee about the draft Troubles Legacy Bill.

It is our view that the Bill, which provides for the State's cooperation with UK-led Troubles-related investigations, does not comply with our international ECHR obligations.

A six-month trial of live facial recognition technology in London’s railway stations cost more than Ā£320,000 and almost 100 hours of police officers’ time.

It ended in one false match against a watchlist of suspects and no arrests.

The rights and liberties that we have all worked so hard to gain and protect are under threat. Funding cuts and sanctions are being inflicted on human rights defenders. The landscape in which we work and seek funding is becoming increasingly uncertain. This is the fight of our lives.

@iccl.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 12:09 PM

We need your help.

As we mark 50 years of ICCL, we're launching an urgent campaign to protect our rights, liberty and democracy.

We're looking for 100 people who share our belief in rights and liberties, and our determination to defend them, to donate €500 each.

The Irish State is failing people who experienced human rights violations and miscarriages of justice.

Ireland has clear legal obligations to address and investigate these incidents.

The lack of any systematic legacy investigative processes must be remedied.

At ICCL we believe in human rights, equality and dignity for all. We hope that as many people as possible will take to the streets this weekend to tell Donald Trump that he and his policies are not what we stand for here in Ireland. Join a protest this weekend if you can and make your voice heard.

An Irish human rights group has contacted Dublin City Council to ask why it refused permission for posters advertising an anti-Trump protest to be erected in the capital.

US President Donald Trump is due to arrive in Ireland on Saturday for a two-day visit.
