This essay by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social is incredibly poignant: www.meditationsinanemergency.com/were-breakin...

(And yes, I realize the irony of sharing davka this essay on a social media account. But here we are.)

meditationsinanemergency.com"We're Breaking Up": On Communication Before and After the New TechGentle reader, I wrote this essay in 2013, but it is all the way down to the critique of pervert glasses, as Meta's version of smart glasses have been dubbed, only too timely in 2026, and the bygone ...

The kids taking the “yes” side had a harder time, which made my heart ache. I had to help them a little: have human beings created anything worthwhile? How about music, art, philosophy? How about love?..."

"...The kids taking the “no” side had an easy time coming up with reasons why humanity was a bad idea. War, violence, corruption, environmental destruction, the climate crisis – many reasons why humanity is a net negative.

Oy: it feels like half of my corner of the internet is arguing about whether or not the mayor of NY is a traitor to his values, and also whether his treason took the form of being too nice to Jews or not being nice enough to Jews. I think it's time to log off and work on my d'var Torah.

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat - Amazon has cleverly figured out that 1) I have a cat 2) who eats greenies; 3) I like to bake with precision and cook with good tamari; and 4) I like speculative fiction. Most of this seems blindingly obvious.

Yeah. The last ten years have left a lot of us, me included, feeling ground down in ways I don't think I can wholly articulate. You're not alone.

My teen invited a (non-Jewish) friend and friend's family over for dinner in the sukkah and then delighted in regaling them with hypotheticals about elephants. :D

A new cycle of Torah readings begins with Bereshit (בְּרֵאשִׁית) which opens with this initial-word panel inhabited by an eagle, a deer, a lion and four dragons.

I love this simile. Yes: bigotry (incl. antisemitism) is like evil mycelium.

Listen to a 1919 recording of "Omar Rabbi Elozor" performed by Cantor Meyer Kanewsky and his choir. The lyrics are based on the last passage of the Talmud's Tractate Berakhot (and include the line "Scholars increase the levels of peace in the world"): publicdomainreview.org/collection/o...

Remember that repentance, atonement + attaining forgiveness are not the same thing. Focus on the first. 1) Own the harm, fully + completely 2) Begin to work to change for real, addressing root causes via therapy + education 3) AMENDS in convo w/SA experts* cot'd + *DON'T APPROACH VICTIM UNPROMPTED

For #HoshanaRabbah, which begins tonight:

For the sake of Acting in good faith
For the sake of Boundaries and their maintenance
For the sake of Choosing to see clearly
For the sake of Directly naming what is broken...

Stunning, if somewhat heartbreaking, essay.

(That's a good description of @sarahkendzior.bsky.social's work in general.)

It’s finally not raining; I can work from my disco tent! (Geronimo thinks the #sukkah should be a catio.)

A Sberian cat is inside a screen door, standing on hind paws with front paws balanced on part of the door, gazing through the screen. A disco ball (around the size of a tennis ball or slightly smaller), tied with frayed orange string to the zipper on the window of a sukkah. Through the sukkah window you can see green lawn and dark green trees.

Being not Jewish, I was not aware of the key role Fruit Gems had in Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other celebrations, I was just sad on my own account they were no longer going to be made. But now we all will have reason to celebrate:
