Behaviour follows economics and economics follows physics, and that tells us that electrification of almost all our energy end-use is inevitable (even those parts that need chemistry can use feedstocks generated with the help of electricity). 4/4
I illustrate this above using block figures, to show how the transition has gone and where it is going. Not because of ideology but because of physics. 3/
This is a great example of the 'primary energy fallacy' often used to suggest we cannot easily transition to renewables, but in fact proves the opposite: it is a lot easier than many think if we discard all that energy wasted from burning stuff; in power stations, in our cars; or in our homes. 2/
The UK has made great strides in greening its power sectors, but must now drive on with electrifying end-use (esp. in cars & heating) to drive out fossil fuels. What many don’t realise that this process will reduce our primary energy needs by two thirds, from 2400 TWh in 2010 to 800 TWh. 1/
Using EPCs as a way of calculating SCOP makes no sense. Greater heat lost does not mean lower SCOP, and I do t know how this idea gets so much traction. SCOP is a dimensionless ratio. The only important input is the skill used in hydronic design. My 200 yr old single glazed house has SCOP=3.6
If it was cut we can guess that the Chancellor has been knobbled by the GMB's relentless lobbying
Based on a talk I gave to a lay audience in a village hall, here is an accessible but fully referenced version of an explanation of my view that for the UK 'Greening our energy: sooner than you think' essaysconcerning.com/2026/10/08/g...
Been out of the studio for tooo long (busy with climate/ energy work), so after a big tidy up I got back in the saddle with a little pen and wash of a much loved street in Bath. I always love the hustle & bustle of people, and the cafe culture. Perfect for ‘cafe art’ 😂
BIG NEWS: Up to 75% of global energy demand could be electrified by 2050 with technologies we already have.
Progress is slow and the barriers are mostly political and institutional.
Today we launch the Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator to change that.
And while in wind capital of Europe (the UK) renewables with some nuclear is clearly a winner, the Tories want to double down on gas, even though UK would be a vassal state in 2050, dependent on unstable Middle East, unreliable US or malign Russia: the antithesis of energy security. Bonkers! 2/2
Is it April 1st? The Tory's are now suggesting autonomous vehicles for rural communities as response to dastardly community Burnham buses. Kapow! Nearly everyone I meet of any persuasion thinks its crazy not have solar on new builds; so the Tory's oppose Future Homes. Kapow! It gets worse 1/

How sad am I, catching up with this session of the Energy Security and Net Zero Select Committee from 2 September, available via iPlayer. Living the dream!
I see no evidence he has. He is more concerned with vanishing bronze sculptures than vanishing glaciers (which inconveniently don’t fit into his culture war framing of the world).
Regarding Wolfram Weimer on climate change, I was going to ask - given the impacts are now clear even to the blind - whether he has softened his angry denialism and obdurate refusal to engage with the facts, evident in his 2007 attack on Stefan Rahmstorf?
The scary thing for the UK economy is we are now heavily dependent on US diesel, and who knows if the glorious leader won't decide to stop exports to save his skin. This report on Diesel from Ed Conway is eye opening youtu.be/sYnmyKB9_G8?...
So why do so many commentators - even ‘experts’ in the power sector - talk about or misleadingly imply the flow of electrons?

Whereas the electromagnetic energy vector involves no physical transport (Henry Poynting (1884), “On the Transfer of Energy in the Electromagnetic Field”, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society). 2/
