One of the joys of native woodlands is that there's always something new to discover no matter the season As autumn settles in, fungi rapidly emerge across woodland floors, deadwood and tree roots. While the fruiting bodies catch our eye, most of the organism remains hidden underground

Ancient yew and oak, growing side by side for probably centuries, their roots and crowns locked in a tight embrace. The magic of an Irish rainforest 🌍

Happy #WorldMentalHealthDay

As daylight fades and winter draws closer, remember to make time for nature

Today we're taking inspiration from this Speckled Wood butterfly, still finding warmth in the autumn sunshine at Girley Wood in Meath

Take care of nature. Let nature take care of you.

Early Autumn belongs to native Spindle 🧡
Its striking pink seed capsules are now beginning to split open, revealing bright orange seeds. Birds feast on the fruit and help disperse the seeds, spreading this beautiful native shrub through hedgerows, woodland edges and scrub. #FarnaghtWoodCoLeitrim

I'm delighted to say that, after many years anguishing over the desperate state of Killarney NP, I'm seeing a partial ecological recovery, like this wild baby arbutus tree. Such positive signs can only mean one thing: the NPWS must finally be taking a more proactive approach to invasive sika deer.

There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

In my kayak, watching a bluefin tuna leaping beside me.

I stood in the presence of several very ancient oaks in Bandon's Castlebernard Woods a few months ago, and was in total awe.

Such trees are now *incredibly* rare in Ireland. Please support Bandon Environmental Action Group in getting the 34.5-acre ecosystem protected.

🍻🌳From Brewmasters to Woodland Warriors! We welcomed the team from Rascals Brewing Company to Bevans' Wood for a day of woodland exploration and tree planting. After learning about wildlife, folklore and rewilding, the group planted 75 native trees. Every tree was grown by NWT volunteers 🌱

Ireland is the last stand for rare coastal machair habitats in the EU – but it’s failing

Most of us are blind to how much unnatural levels of browsing by grazers impact the landscape. Not only by shaving vast areas bare, but shaping what survives. On this young oak that somehow managed to 'get away', for eg, the browse line is clear. There's an omnipresent, invisible strimmer at work.
