Let’s bring leg bowls back into style!

Very interesting. It’s on my weekend reading list.

I am familiar with this project, and am very fond of Atlantic whitecedar. The opposition is not to restoration but to logging to create suitable habitat for these trees. There is widespread opposition to logging, which is noisy and messy, but is a valid restoration method and will be successful.

We call trees like this - very large, oddly shaped -wolf trees.

Great news, Jason! This should increase your ability to influence forest policy.

Sorry, but this is not a photo of a real tree. You refer to it in one place as a pedunculate oak, in another as the Angel oak. It is neither. No real oak branches like this.

Nice photo of a lovely tree. I need to make more Gambel oak photos. I took this one on the shoulders of Humphreys Peak outside of Flagstaff. I guess I need more western trips.

This is one of the most exciting science stories I’ve read in a newspaper in quite some time. I wish @couchmicroscopy.bsky.social all the best in her new position.

Joshua trees are uncommon, with a limited range, and threatened by climate change. Read what scientists are doing to stabilize the species.

Well done, Alex. This is important.

This old bur oak, Quercus macrocarpa, on the University of Kentucky campus is one of my favorites for its fine form. It predates the existence of the university by several hundred years. Unfortunately, that building behind the tree was filling with people and the parking lot was jammed.

That’s great news! I hope you find as much joy in forestry school as I did.

Thank you for this fascinating story, Jason. I haven’t yet seen this issue of Sci Am. I think this story may find a place in my next book.

Thank you Doc. Although I am primarily a tree biologist, I have a botanists interest in other plants, especially their history with humans.

Sadly, our grocery stores carry a lot of “bread-like objects.”

Both are beautiful.

This is horrible news. We needed Joe.

Let me recommend David Quammen’s outstanding book The Tangled Tree, which takes a deep look at the changes in biology during Woese’s life.

It is such a shame to see what is being done to the Herald Leader, but I’m glad to be able to read Bill Estep at The Lantern.
