For Marvelous Middle Grade Monday I have a retelling of a classic. LITTLE MONSTERS by Máire Roche. As you can guess from the cover, it has quite the twist!

THE TENTH MISTAKE OF HANK HOOPERMAN is my pick for today's Marvelous Middle Grade Monday. If you haven't read any of @choldenko.bsky.social books, run and get one.

Take the time to heal! It will get better. I know from personal experience.

My cat likes to be beside me when I’m in a soft chair, but thinks the laptop is invasive because I use both hands, so often leads with a tail flick of disgust. When I’m at my desk she’ll sometimes join me on the cushion I provide.

Black and white car on side in chair with paws on armrest and back against owner’s jeanclad leg. Owner hand resting on cat belly.

Every time I ponder this question, the negatives are about working on a project I don’t really have a passion for—too mechanical writing—and the querying process. It’s so wearing. But I love writing!

Yes. Right now I'm working on a YA sci-fi. Trying to find an agent for middle grade novels and picture books that are finished.

A small creative win today. My husband had a bleach spot on t-shirt with an island scene. I didn't have a fabric marker to match the blue shirt, so I dotted the bleach spot with gray and turned it into a bird. He kept looking at the shirt for a problem that he couldn't find. Then I confessed. :-)

part of being a picture book writer is switching two words that completely change the power of a manuscript!

Researching the market? Check the date on that advice. A post from a few years ago might say a genre is over, while editors are asking for it today (hello, dystopia!). Trends move. No genre is out of style forever. Keep writing the book you love.

Aside from filler words, looking at scene, subplot, and character could help. Do all scenes do at least two things: advance the plot, show theme, raise the stakes, and/or help character(s)? Could any character be combined and/or cut? What purpose does a subplot serve to the overall narrative? #AskDv

I didn't get that many but came home from vacation to a pile of books from Simon and Schuster to review!
