Local government exists to provide governance to local communities. Seems like we have no voice in the current “debate” or are you going to “consult” us at the end maybe when you’ve decided what to do?

Can anyone advise me how I take part in this 3 month consultation on ScotGov proposals for local government reform when all I can find is an article here gov.scot/publications/p… and no consultation here? consult.gov.scot/consultation_f

I haven’t looked at whether it has been purchased or not

Who Owns Scotland? I've published 45th monthly update to Who Owns Scotland which records ownership of 5100 landholdings covering 5.95 million ha (14.7 million acres) or over 77.25% of rural Scotland. This project is solely funded by subscriptions. Please consider subscribing. (link in next post).

My latest blog discusses the future of this important site. The relevant legal documents are published and I would be interested in the views of others as to whether in fact Castle Tioram is ownerless 4/4 andywightman.scot/2026/09/who-...

Anta Estates never relinquished ownership. Mr Brown died 2022. According to Panama Papers, Anta was struck off in 2010. Castle Tioram thus falls to Crown - to the King’s & Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer, in Crown Office in Edinburgh. To notify them however, costs £ hundreds which I don’t have. 3/4

A public inquiry followed and ultimately Historic Scotland refused Scheduled Monument consent. The plans fell through. But Lex Brown never owned the Castle. it was owned instead by a company called Anta Estates Limited registered in Saint Kitts and Nevis. 2/4

Castle Tioram is an ancient ruined castle in Loch Moidart one of the seats of Macdonald of Clanranald. It hit the headlines over 20 years ago when the person who claimed to own it (Lex Brown) proposed to renovate the property and convert it to residential use 1/4

That application has now been processed and Hugh MacLeod now owns the Cuillin. Further background in my newly published blog. 5/5 andywightman.scot/2026/09/hugh...

@andywightman.scotSep 23, 2026, 6:12 PM

John MacLeod never in fact sold the Cuillin but his son Hugh MacLeod (who inherited the estate in 2007) submitted an application for voluntary land registration in 2020. 4/5

@andywightman.scotSep 23, 2026, 6:12 PM

The Scottish Office invited the Crown Estate Commissioners to examine the validity of MacLeod's title and James Drummond Young QC concluded that MacLeod had demonstrated sufficient possession to enable his claim of ownership to stand. 3/5

@andywightman.scotSep 23, 2026, 6:12 PM

Some of us questioned whether in fact he actually owned the famous mountains. His claim was founded on a Crown Charter of 1611 that granted 4 unciates of land - around 240 acres and sufficient to graze around 240 head of cattle (the land being offered for sale extended to 22,300 acres). 2/5

In March 2000, John MacLeod announced that he was selling the Cuillin. 1/5

I have no view on this proposal (a matter for folk in Edinburgh) but the legal duty to consult is very useful in highlighting proposed changes

@andywightman.scotSep 15, 2026, 1:20 PM

My view is that the use of common good land in Edinburgh is a matter fir the good citizens of Edinburgh of which I am not one!

@andywightman.scotSep 15, 2026, 1:20 PM

Not sure what the problem is but I have not read the details of the proposal

@andywightman.scotSep 10, 2026, 8:15 PM

many thanks - would you like to leave that comment on my blogpost?

So what is the Flesh Market and who owns it? My latest blog is the first in a series of The Land Left Behind and explores the meaning of the place and its curious ownership history. 4/4 andywightman.scot/2026/09/what...
