this is one thing where it's gonna be hard for people doing this by hand to continue to derive meaning from AI is just automatically "solving" problems people have been working on in teams for years in a matter of hours + barging into open source repositories & stealing / "helping" their work
To celebrate our six-month anniversary, we're unlocking a few fantastic pieces from our archives. First up, @soila.bsky.social unpacks—and proposes breaking down—English's dominance in fanfic spaces. Read the piece, then take advantage of our sale! 50% off subscriptions for the first six months:
Saw this on the shelf at Target and it’s like a portal to an utterly unknowable parallel world. As if i was peering into the dimension from Stalker
For Fansplaining I wrote about Jane Austen fic, aka JAFF, and how a moderating decision 30 years ago set the tone for an entire fan culture of genre-shaming and gatekeeping around content. Also don't forget Fansplaining is currently having a six-month sale with 50% off! Subscribe, read, and share!
ahem the stakes are very high for my girl molly
how it feels talking to Democrats in 2026
Just walked past today and there was another television crew setting up. Incredible scenes.
you know, if she had taken our august public transit system to the neighborhood—which is truly one of the most connected on the subway map—perhaps she would have traveled lighter
tbh I would have welcomed MORE Austen jokes lol 💞
my neighbor, molly
I should note that I predate the animatronic bird shop in the neighborhood and have never gone inside; I assumed it was for fancy children but now I know it's for fancy adults. Obviously I'm on their side and support their right to charge $15 million for the bird and be legit mean to all customers.
I live around the corner from the animatronic bird shop (it is somehow the closest retail store to my home?), and yesterday I went past there while running errands and there were multiple reporters out front, including a television crew vox-popping a man who is presumably my neighbor.
Folks who look at fic often treat the big archives as wholly representative, but there are so many subcultures within our subculture. @bookshop.bsky.social reports a fascinating story about rigid content moderation, self-publishing, and what happens when the wide-open spaces of fic are constrained:
(Also that enshittification note is important, too—I’ve seen people complaining in the subreddit for ages. Unfortunately many still seem to be addicted and at least one was driven to suicide by a “character”.)
It’s not specifically that so much as the cost of the compute is so high—interesting in the weeds reporting from 404 here: www.404media.co/character-ai...
New: I pulled the Character ai bankruptcy documents. They show:
- They were spending $14 million/month on compute alone at a time their revenue was around ~$1 million/month
- Currently losing $9 million a month
- They admitted they enshittified & that it didnt work
I'm sorry but that's just what it's called from now on. I will never stop. My husband is going to lose his fucking mind the first time I casually drop it, I cannot wait
🙏🏼 thank youuuuu
I genuinely respect people who (justifiably or otherwise) get so mad about a book or movie that they go and write a novel-length version in response. Complaining online? Trying to start shit with the actual authors? Weak. Hobbyless behavior. Besmirching the name of "fan"
OH NO I am so sorry, I only have to wait until this weekend 😭
