#Collapse news:

"(Methane) once frozen in Arctic ground is slowly leaking and warming the planet"

That's one of the big, scary climate tipping points we've been warned and warning about for decades.

And it seems to be tipping, so that's great.

phys.orgHeat-trapping gas once frozen in Arctic ground is slowly leaking and warming the planetAs Ted Schuur stepped along the edges of Smith Lake, a bubble surfaced from the muck underfoot. And then another. They're bubbles of methane, a potent heat-trapping gas made from decomposing plants an...

Ever wondered why cloud droplets come in two sizes?
Mixing in drier air can create a second mode and boost droplet spread. The new model cuts error by up to 33%.

Does El Niño offer a sneak preview of future climate for tropical forests?

Well, yes. Our new study shows that heat & drought during 23-24 El Niño will likely be new normal for many tropical forests. A worrisome preview.

In this new perspective, we argue to ditch the geoengineering narrative and approach OAE as a flexible tool for localised CO2 management - focusing instead on environmentally responsible, demonstrably carbon-negative, small-scale OAE across diverse local contexts.

Found this piece infuriating; not completely sure why. More just 'burn it even more often and all will be fine'?

New paper published in @agu.org's GRL by Klingebiel and colleagues #AC3

Arctic cold air outbreaks generate distinct cloud patterns, from organised streets to open cells. Our study reveals that both wind-driven and buoyancy-driven instability jointly determine these regimes.

The Picture shows a so-called cold air outbreak (taken from Nasa Worldview on 17 March 2024).

Earth’s getting rounder.
(Ice at the poles squishes the planet so it bulges at the equator; as glaciers melt, there’s less flattening.)

Interesting study: instead of asking what different ice-sheet models predict, it asks which assumptions hold up against observations.
